Feeling a bit mixed about this week's episode. It wasn't a "wow" episode at all, and compared to the amazingness of last week I think maybe it was a bit of a let down. That being said, I enjoyed it while I was watching it, but now that it's over I'm just kind of... I don't know, meh about it.
Random thoughts:
1. I really liked the opening scenes in the TARDIS. First of all the way they were shot was quite lovely and then there were the interactions. It seems the Doctor is a bit obsessed with this "is she or isn't she pregnancy" thing. I'm curious to know where he was planning to go if he'd succeeded in depositing Amy and Rory on another planet for a bit. Perhaps this will come up again?
2. Several of the Doctor's lines made me laugh - like the cockerel and the line when he saw that the TARDIS had sunk into the acid. (Clearly it's wasn't that memorable though because I can't remember what the line was -
the_redjay has kindly reminded me of the line. It was: "What're you doing down there?").
3. I enjoyed the Doctor asking for shoes in the midst of conflict and the reaction he got.
4. The special effects really stood out to me this week - the solar storm in particular was beautifully done. So many pretty colours!
5. The music also was really great this week. It really fit with the action (as usual) and there were some truly beautiful melodies in there. Well done Murray Gold.
6. I liked that the Doctor (and Rory) were so determined to try and solve things without war. I wish it had worked, but of course, human nature got in the way.
7. I liked all the references and comments the Doctor made about humans - it reminded me of Nine. In a good way.
8. I liked that the Doctor was "gangered". I have to say, the minute he stuck his hand in the rubbery goo that this was going to happen, but still it was awesome when he came out all fleshlike - very creepy moment - I imagine there were a lot of very frightened children. Also, what an evil cliffhanger!
9. I have mixed feeling about how attached Rory seemed to Jennifer. I enjoyed the scenes with them and it was nice that he was taking some initiative in an adventure and such but I feel like this is part of an overall theme they seem to be building of Amy getting insecure about Rory. I'm not sure where it's headed but it makes me uneasy. Also, I feel like part of it doesn't make sense - most of his interaction with her was with her Ganger so it seems a bit weird to me that he goes after her in the end.
10. I found it interesting that "the flesh" wasn't so much a monster as a misunderstood sentient being, I feel like this is something that will be important next week. Also, I love it when the villains are morally ambiguous.
Even though I didn't love this episode, I am interested to see where this will go next week. I think seeing Matt Smith x 2 should be fun. And hopefully we'll learn a bit more about the whole woman in the door thing.
So yeah, this definitely won't be going on my list of favourites, and is not likely one I'll seek out to rewatch, but I did enjoy it well enough. It's certainly not my least favourite either.
ETA: Whoops... I had the wrong episode number because I am an idiot. Title corrected. Safe to read if you saw The Rebel Flesh.
