Twelve Days of Christmas Ficlets: Day Nine

They picked it up while travelling to the distant lands of Brie. It had been tiny at first, no bigger than an acorn that Rose could hold in the palm of her hand. She’d taken an instant liking to the creature, which was called a Grybhotis, and had asked if they could keep one.
Against his better judgement, the Doctor agreed. Less than two hours later, the Doctor was already finding the Elephant-like creature insufferable. Within the warmth of the TARDIS it had started to grow remarkably quickly, and was soon the size of a small horse. It lumbered around the console, banging into things and making a tremendous racket. The Doctor winced, instantly regretting his agreement.
He looked over at Rose who was watching the Grybhotis, whom she’d named Lottie, with rapt attention and he could tell she was still enamoured. So, instead of immediately demanding that they return the creature, the Doctor sighed, deciding to put up with it a while longer instead.
An hour later, Lottie had found her voice and began roaring in jubilant song. The Doctor felt a headache pound through his veins with every note. Much to his disappointment, Rose seemed unbothered by the sound and continued petting Lottie’s leathery skin.
It wasn’t until the creature grew another three sizes and began to start following Rose everywhere that she seemed to reconsider her position.
She found him in the library where he’d been hiding shamelessly.
“Doctor?” she said tentatively.
He raised his eyebrow. “Yes?”
“I think we need to do something about Lottie.”
He bounced up to his feet. It was about time. “Yes, I agree.”
“Good.” Rose grinned. “She needs a mate and I know just where to put him!”
She rushed from the room, leaving the Doctor to gape after her.
