Day 17 - Favorite mini series

At first I thought I wouldn't be able to answer this, because the only mini-series I could think of that I've seen was "Torchwood: Children of Earth" and seeing as how I will never be watching that again (the 5th episode haunts me far too much) it doesn't qualify. But then I realized that my FAVOURITE MOVIE EVER technically qualifies as a mini-series. And so I bring you -

Anne of Green Gables. Most of you probably know the one I'm talking about. Made in the 1980's, by Sullivan Entertainment. It used to air on CBC in usually 2 installments, often followed by the equally wonderful sequel, Anne of Avonlea.

So why is it my favourite? Well for starters, Megan Follows makes an extraordinarily perfect Anne. Then there's the rest of the cast - Colleen Dewhurst as Marilla? AWESOME. The actors playing Matthew, Rachel, Gilbert, Diana? SPOT ON. I have really never seen a more accurate and enjoyable adaptation of a book to film. It's so true to the book it makes me want to squee. Plus there are all those wonderfully awkward scenes between Anne and Gilbert that eventually lead to one of my favourite fictional pairings ever. Seriously, in my first few years of university one of my close friends and I used to have lengthy discussions about how we had to find our own Gilberts and how apparently calling someone a pill is the secret to a long lasting relationship (Our further evidence: Tom Hanks calls Meg Ryan a Pill in You've Got Mail).

Anyway, I digress. This is a great movie with so many excellent scenes that I can never pick a favourite. Is it when Anne is going on about being "in the depths of despair" and Marilla's response is "To despair is to turn your back on God!"? Is it Anne freaking out at Rachel Lynnd and later apologizing entirely too dramatically? Is it when Anne breaks the slate over Gilberts head? Is it when Matthew goes to the general store to buy Anne a dress with puffed sleeves and ends up buying a rake and 20 pds of brown sugar before he has the nerve to ask about it? Is it Anne trying on said dress and hugging Matthew in the barn? Is it Anne nearly drowning while reenacting the Lilly maiden and being rescued by Gilbert? Is it Matthew's death (which makes me BAWL every time)? Or is it that brilliant moment when Gilbert tells Anne that he's giving up Avonlea school for her and they walk across the field together?

You see my dilemma? There are so many excellent scenes in this movie - even more than I've mentioned, and I love them all! The sequel is also very good, although I find most of the stuff about Anne away at that boarding school to be a bit boring - plus it's less accurate to the books. But it ends with one of my favourite quotes of all time "It's not what the world holds for you, It's what you bring to it." I quote that all the time.

Sadly, when they attempted to make a 3rd one a few years ago it was a dismal disappointment since it was a complete departure from the books. Although I do admit that it was nice to see Gilbert and Anne together again, despite glaring inaccuracies and blatant changes.

I had trouble finding the scenes that I wanted,so instead I found a trailer for the first movie and an adorable Anne/Gilbert Video with clips from all 3 films. *sigh* even after all these years there's something about these two that makes me melt. They really are my ultimate *ship*
