I'm watching today. I recorded it. I really like JLM so I want to like this very much. I think it's safe for me to say here (without being jumped) that I haven't been thrilled with Lucy L since Ally McBeal, so my guess is if the writing for her is excellent then I'll like her.
I like procedurals if the characters are interesting. In anything I guess, it's all about the characters for me.
I haven't really seen Lucy L in anything since Ally McBeal myself so I'm not sure about that. I did like seeing her in this, and I have no issue with her at all, but the biggest thing for me a week later is that the whole thing didn't *feel* like a Sherlock Holmes story at all.
What did you end up thinking about it now that you've seen it?
I really enjoyed JLM-even more than I expected. I like procedurals, but this was a bit blah on that end. But those often pick up pace as shows progress. My problem is Watson. I liked Lucy L. But she wasn't Watson for me. To be honest this issue is mine alone and very personal, which may not be fair.
I can't get by the fact they didn't make her a Soldier. I work with female Soldiers every day. A female Soldier died just three days ago due to a suicide bomber in Afghanistan. People want to see me not liking a female Watson as sexist, but I see not making her a Soldier as this giant slap in the face of every woman I see in uniform every day. I just can't get my mind around that.
I'll keep watching because I want to give it a fair chance and I really did like JLM as Sherlock a lot. I can see him being the end result of a Sherlock of this age.
Yeah, I mostly agree with this. I especially agree that I liked how they made New York look, both with his flat and with New York itself. But I also especially agree that it felt more like a standard procedural than an interpretation of Sherlock Holmes. I am, like you, not a procedural fan, so I'm taking this off the DVR.
The more I think about it the more it bothers me that it didn't feel like a Sherlock Holmes story at all. It has nothing to do with Watson being a woman or any of that, but I feel like they stripped away too much of the canon and what was left was like a pale echo of the source material. The procedural thing is a real killer for me though. I think it will probably do well with a US audience because as the millions of versions of CSI and NCIS And Law and Order can attest - a lot of people *do* like procedurals. I'm just not one of them.
I may still give another episode or two a try to see if the things I don't like are the result of it being a pilot episode, but I'm not sure how much of this intent is me feeling guilty that I'm possibly comparing it to Sherlock too much. I tried really hard not to, but it was nearly impossible. Sherlock grabbed me from the get go, this did not.
