Making new friends is by far the crappiest part about moving to a new place. I've had to do this twice since college, and there's a couple things that seemed to work both times:
1. Have roommates. I know this really isn't an option since you live with Pete, but having a cool roommate is by far the easiest way to get a new friend. 2. Look for RIT grads your age who live nearby. Having a common background gives a friendship with them a fighting chance. 3. Hang out with coworkers after work. In Syracuse, I lived in 3 or 4 different places in 9 months, so the roommate-friend situation was going nowhere. I had just started to play video games after work with my coworkers when I left for to SF. 4. Join community activities. The San Mateo Recreation Center sends out a community activities catalog in the mail. I took a tennis class for about 6 months with some cool local people, but I stopped going before I got to know any of them enough to hang out outside of tennis class.
It does take some time and consistency to find friends in a new place... Alternatively, you can try and talk your old friends into moving nearby :)
