ADV Strikes Back

A quote you may have already read.

"When asked of the effect of fansubs on the market, Greenfield described it as 'devastating.' He then went on to describe the current state of the Japanese market, in which less then 24 hours after a fansub is put online, it is already being sold on bootleg DVDs. He also mentioned that Japanese studios are looking to American companies increasingly more for production money, and that ADV is currently funding, in some manner and portion, nearly 1/3 of anime shows currently airing in Japan."

Translation : "DERRP! I'm Matt Greenfield! When my company was a tiny little blip of nothing, fansubs were great. In fact half the stuff we put out in our first year was stuff we had only heard of because of fansubs *we* saw, like the fansub of Devil Hunter Yohko I still have in a box in my basement. Despite the fact that all of the major fan-favorites that generated massive revenues for us in the crucial first years we were open were popularized by fansub tapes circulating in the months before we released them, I have had a change of heart. Since we are now a giant company rolling in filthy lucre and profiled in Forbes magazine, we have re-evaluated our stand on fansubbery, having now determined that all fansubs are wrought in Lucifer's own forge. Also, 1/3 of all anime is funded by ADV, so we should control the entire industry, cause we're so awesome. So don't watch fansubs. And thirty bucks is a deal! If you don't stop with this fansub thing, we'll charge forty. Just try me. Fucking nerds."

Okay, here's my take. Who buys bootleg anime DVDs? Not me. Not very many people, in fact. I think most people do what I do; download a show, watch it, and if I love it, I buy the DVD. If I don't like it, I wouldn't buy the DVDs anyway, and there have been MANY times where I ended up liking a show I never would have thought I'd like (Kaleidostar) and then end up buying it SPECIFICALLY BECAUSE I SAW THE FANSUB. So ADV has *MORE* of my money because of fansubs. I know this is more nerd-faggotry than you're used to seeing in my INTARWEB JOURNAL, but this just really steamed my carpet. Especially considering the about-face ADV is doing on this subject. Does anybody remember a little debacle called "ADV FANSUBS, " eh? Cause I certainly do.
