Yesterday the campaign against the Manchester congestion charge, supported exclusively by the Conservatives among the three main parties, succeeded overwhelmingly, with all ten boroughs voting no. The official results are as follows:

Satisfied though we are with the result, Manchester Conservatives are not prepared to allow Labour and the Liberal Democrats to get away with sitting on their hands and doing nothing to improve our public transport, as they threatened before the vote to try to bully us into accepting the congestion charge. We will be outlining our proposals to bring real, lasting improvements to public transport - improvements that will lead to the costs to working people in Manchester going down, not up - in the coming weeks.
