2D barcodes - a blast from the past. Back in the '80s a few computer magazines used to print them, and you could read in program code using a special reader. It was a wank then and is a wank now. My workplace has been required to start dealing with them (not me, fortunately), and our sales people are too stupid and illiterate to say "don't go that way, go with services that accessible through wireless and phone
They have potential, if you need a barcode with more information. And with more and more phones being able to read them....well, they're a gimmick. If they were more prevalent, I could see the reader coming in handy.
I'd prefer if it could read normal barcodes, though. That could potentially be very useful.
My point is that their is only a small amount of data you can shove in those things, and rather than use them to drive some response from the phone, it makes a hell of a lot more sense to mount a webservice somewhere that is accessed via a client in the phone. The future is that all phones will have that sort of ability, but not all phones will have the ability to read a 2D barcode. Why spend time and effort (in the case of my company) addressing a technology with a limited lifespan at the expense of addressing technologies with a future.
