I think now is as good a time as any to inform you that as part of the
Fringe Festival I shall be appearing in
The Zibidee Show at Happy, corner of Vivian and Tory Streets at 8.30pm Tuesday to Friday. It's a show in two parts, the first part being a short play telling the story of a mad Russian scientist named Dr N, and the second part being original songs performed by local band Zibidee.
In a deliciously ironic twist of fate, I'm not in this show as a musician. No indeed. I'm making my acting debut, in what I think I can call the lead role without being terribly arrogant. Well, I am the only one with any actual lines. I play Leonid, Dr N's lab assistant, translator, general dogsbody and ass-wiper.
The play was written by Nathan Green and myself - Nathan came up with the original concept and story and wrote the first draft of the script, I wrote the final draft. So really, I should at least get an equal writing credit with Nathan, but I'm not too fussed - besides, the programmes have most likely already been written before I had a major hand in the script.
The main reason I took so long to tell you about this show is that, in all honesty, I didn't much like it to begin with. But in the last couple of weeks it's turned into something of which I'm actually rather fond. The script works, the direction's great - the only thing I'm worried about now is my acting. Ever heard me trying to do a Russian accent? Scary, my loves, very very scary.
Tomorrow I'll be taking a razor to my head to get the fully bald look. I should take my nose ring out, because Leonid's really not a nose ring kind of guy, but I have no idea how to get the damn thing out. It went in in August of 1997, and in all that time has not been taken out once. Oh well.
So. I'm on stage in 36 hours, full dress rehearsal today. I'm terrified that I'm going to suddenly freeze up and forget my lines as soon as the lights go down. I've never done this sort of thing before.
Well, Wellingtonians reading this, I'd be delighted to see you there.
Wish me luck, me loves. I'm gonna fuckin' need it!
G'night!
