If you asked me a week ago to list the three rules of computer programs, it would be something like this:
1) They should run.
2) They should die gracefully.
3) They should uninstall cleanly.
So I've had to come up with a new one. 4) User level software should stay the fuck away from the master boot record. I installed Norton Systemworks 2006, and it came with a piece of software called GoBack that is supposed to track major system changes and system files to avoid any sort of complications. So I installed it. It turns out this software sits between the OS and the system (like booting itself before Windows). This was making boots take 3-4 times as long, so I pulled it. I guess the uninstall screwed up (or maybe the install), but this actually crippled my computer. We're talking boot times of an hour or more. It took reformatting and flashing the BIOS in order to fix it. I had just set up within the last week.
Oh by the way. I finished Buffy.
