of greeks and muslims.

So last night I went to this Greek Festival in Boulder with one of my fellow grad students. She is from Turkey. I'm in a stage of paying more careful consideration to other cultures, particularly now that I understand my own a bit more. And I'm a bit partial to things of a Middle Eastern variety. I'm still thinking in the back of my head that I might go there someday.

I learned a lot about Mediterranean culture from my friend, and a little bit about the Islam faith. She participates in Ramadan, and keeps track of the time of day for saying prayers, but other Muslims look down on her for not covering her hair every day. Same bullshit, different religion. I'd like to know more about the muslim faith, but if a muslim I can get along with doesn't even feel comfortable going to a Mosque, how is that even possible? I'm trying to figure out how to do my little part in that whole Coexist thing.

It's amazing how different America is from anywhere else. There is not the same sense of community that most cultures have, it's more about independence. This can be either very good or very bad. It can make friends out of enemies, or it can make enemies out of friends. Right now, I think the way most Americans act, it's going more in the very bad direction.
