...but what I like best is when less time = more money :)
So, I had kind of an awesome day today. Allow me to elaborate.
Last week, I picked up a rumour from my peers at others stores that changes were coming to our expected work hours. See, as it stands now, as a Specialty Division Manager, I'm expected to work a minimum of 45 hours a week, for a salary. If I work 60 hours, I get paid the same. I'm sure some of you know how it works. The news they were cutting the 45 down to 40 was a welcome relief...a little less time for the same pay. I could live with that...but when we officially learned that was happening, there were also hints that something bigger was in store, but they were confidential...until today, when it was officially released.
Starting on March 5th, I, and all other specialty division managers will be changed back to an hourly job code. They will take our current salary, calculate an hourly rate of pay based on a 40 hour work week, while keeping the annual total the same, and that will be the basis for my pay. Nothing else will change. We will still be considered salary management, we will have the same benefits, salary, vacation time, etc. The only change will be that we will be required to punch in and out, including our lunches...and we will be paid accordingly. However, the BEST part of it is...this will also now include overtime. No more 60 hour work weeks without compensation for extra time. This makes me happy in pants.
It boils down to this. I'm going to make the same money for less time (which ends up being a bit of a pay increase strictly from an hourly rate point of view). I will get overtime at time and a half for any extra hours worked...all while keeping the exact same responsibilities, job title, and benefits. This is, in a word...awesome!!
It's too bad they couldn't have done this about a month ago...I was regularily putting in 60 hours a week for Inventory. As a rough estimate based on my salary right now, I would have been making about...oh...$450 a week for JUST the overtime. Oh well, there's always next year ;)
