At work, we have a girl getting married sometime in June, so right now she is making plans (she has her venues booked but is deciding now on the finer details). Listening to her drone on and on about pink, purple and all things girls, it made me begin to think about some of the things I'd want at my potential future wedding. The following is a list of some things
1. Sneakers: Call me un-classy, but on a day known for high stress and fairly uncomfortable clothes, I at least want my feet to be comfortable. Not just for me either, I'd clearly mark on the invitation that sneakers were the preferred accessory for the feet. Sneakers would be allowed. I'd want to sport my chucks, it is probably the ultimate fashion accessory for someone like me, they can be comfortable and classy. Sure, for the actual event I'd have dress shoes, but after that, my feet are going to breathe a nice sigh of relief. I wouldn't mind groomsmen wearing them during the ceremony.
2. Early Ending: Everyone knows these affairs go on for hours for some weddings, but I'd want mine over by about 8:30 ~ 9:30, and not for the reason everyone expects. I'd want to end the session early for the same reason Brian and Karen ended it early, to go out afterward sans the invited dead. Every wedding has the guests that you didn't necessarily mind being there but were forced to invite out of etiquette (parent's friends, creepy uncle). Why spoil everybody's time with them when you can ditch them at 8:30 and go party someplace else (laser tag, anybody?) afterward.
3. Theme: There never is a good theme at the weddings I've been to, so I've decided a theme is necessary for mine. Not necessarily in the ceremony or the dress of the wedding party, but I want people at the reception to go, "Damn!" something they will remember. No, this doesn't indicate a Star Wars wedding in my future, but it does trend towards a movie theme. Maybe classic films, perhaps the films of Luc Besson? Any which way, theme is important. Enchantment Under the Sea Dance is my favorite idea, as long as someone yells, "McFly."
4. Good, live music: Not necessarily with the theme, but there better be a kick ass cover band playing my wedding, who can do rock and 80s pop. I don't want an emcee or a DJ, I want a guitar playing, "Stairway to Heaven."
5. Party favors people will appreciate: We've all been to a wedding where you get a small bottle of something for later, or some small tokens of the wedding (I have some classy shot glasses somewhere). My wedding, personalized. This is why I want a small list, so I can get the people who attend something they'd want. Small board games is an idea or card games (imagine getting a game of set or Boomo! or whatever). Perhaps tickets to heaven? There is a website which does sell it.
6. Games at the table: I went to a wedding once where everyone at the table I was seated at we're the misc. people, the people who you couldn't quite fit into other tables. We knew the bride and groom but knew nothing about each other, luckily I asked who I'd be sitting with and came prepared with a deck of cards. It was the best ice breaker and loosened up the evening. For all tables I want small games like this, for people to play to get to know one another.
7. Pool party: For some reason, a day after pool party seems like fun if you don't go immediately to the honeymoon. Something at the pool, not necessarily booking a pool but just going to a pool. Get, "Just Married," swimming trunks.
There are others, but I think these might make the wedding the most fun. Fuck the color scheme, get me some M80s and a paper bag. Grandma's in for a surprise!
