Dear Mr. Bah,

I’ve always been interested in and passionate about writing, but prior to this year I had not taken a course in journalism. Having no experience in the journalistic style of writing I was at first daunted by the abrupt submersion into THAT magazine. Lacking any knowledge of how to write an article, I was given an assignment to complete. As it turned out, by “getting on the bus,” I was able to assemble and assimilate all of the literary and interview devices and talents necessary to effectively write for Tam’s news magazine. Both with direction from my editors and the useful exercises we performed, I was able to find my niche in the journalism community. Being able to observe meetings between editors also benefited me by providing the opportunity to learn about what work goes into journalism besides my contributions as a reporter. Not only have I learned journalism from this class, but also an appreciation and enjoyment of this combination of writing, interview, research and interpretation.
Next year I hope to not only continue to develop my reporting skills, but to further my immersion into journalism in its entirety by being tutored in the editorial and layout processes as well. Throughout my subsequent two years in journalism (perhaps next year?) I aspire to cultivate my budding journalism ability and channel my acquired acquaintance into an editorial position. It is my desire to proceed with my journey on this proverbial “bus,” maintaining it as a feature in my life beyond high school and during college to apply my attained knowledge to my career endeavors in related fields. Thank you for the favorable experience, which I know will continue, and see you next year.

Sincerely,

Becky Caroli
