WHATS THE WORD
DEUTERONOMY 6:9 Hear O Israel the Lord our God,the Lord is one.Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.These commandments I give you today are to be upon your hearts.Impress them on your children.Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road,when you lie down and when you get up.Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads.Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates.
I wonder, to how many of us this seems like being to fanatical about our faith.Well it is not fanatical in the eyes of the Lord.The scripture never says if you feel like it talk about these commands with your children.Neither does the scripture say if you are in the mood love the Lord your God with all your heart.No this passage in Deuteronomy gives all of these directions without consideration of our personal preference or our opinion of our personal qualification.It is obvious that when it comes to our children WE as parents and specifically as fathers are called to be teachers of the commands of God.Does this scripture say you are to take your children to Sunday school and let the Sunday school teacher teach them Gods commands and let that Sunday school teacher impress them,and write them on their foreheads and so on?NO!!!!!!!
This is absolutely a direct command to parents as to their responsibility to the training of their children.I say in particular to fathers because remember in Ephesians ch:6 it tells fathers to bring their children up in the training and instruction of the Lord.
Gods word is relevant and applies everywhere throughout life.Let us seize every teaching opportunity we can at baketball games and practices,at McDonalds when the cashier gives you incorrect change and your children are present tell them when you correct her error and give back the excess change,tell your children that you do it because Gods word commands you not to lie or steal.Lets make it real dads.
In the face of the war our country is now enmeshed in may we stand a symbol to our children and within our nation of our faith in God in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord amen
