So I got a 10 day free trial invite from
bellebet for WoW, and I decided to (finally) give it a try. Here are my inital impressions:
First thoughts are that it's pretty. I'll give it that. No where near the level of deatil that the world of the City of X games have, but it's still pretty. Character generator is VERY limited compared to what I'm used to with the CoX games. I was pretty disappointed that there weren't more options to choose from. No height/weight selections, no body type selections, no facial characteristicts that you can customize. Maybe I'm just spoiled by CoX, but if they can do what they've done with their character generator, then a company with the kind of resources that Blizzard has could most certainly make an effort to improve the selections.
Then I get into the game itself. I'll give them one thing, the concept of a 'trial install' that they have, where the game downloads content in the background while you play, is brilliant. It gets you right into the game without having to spend hours downloading and installing everything. Until it breaks, that is. After playing once (and shutting down my computer overnight), the install 'broke' and kept giving me errors when I tried to load. So I decided to do a full install and see if that would work. I was prepared for a long download of all the content, so I wasn't suprised much when it took most of the day to download the installer (particularly because I was playing CoX while it was downloading in the background).
But when I finally got the installer downloaded and installed, the game did something that pissed me off. IT DOWNLOADED PATCHES NOT ONCE... NOT TWICE... BUT FOUR DAMN TIMES. And every time, it had to restart the game, only to fake me out and install another patch. C'mon, Blizzard! What the hell are you thinking? Compound the patches so that you only have to do it once. CoX does that. Steam does that for it's games. What the fuck are you doing? It was the most obnoxious thing I've had to deal with in a long time (in regards to gaming, that is). It's not that hard to program your patch system so that when you update your client, the older installs update all the way to the newest patch without having to take intermediate steps. I expect much better from the leader in MMORPGs.
Honestly, because of that, I will give the game a chance over the 10 days, but I will most likely not continue playing after that. It's pretty, yes, but far to limited in what I've seen so far. And the interface doesn't make much sense to me, coming from the world of CoX as I am. WoW, you have 8 more days to impress me, and I don't think you're going to manage to do so.
