As he sat on the bobbing raft staring at the sinking sun, Smoker realised this was as close as a perfect setting he could get with Ace, who was draped across his lap, tired and pale.

Though he tired to ignore it, Smoker knew he was no better off. Hunger had been and gone. Exhaustion had reached the point that the line between the waking world and the dreaming one was blurred.

The light on the horizon was about to be extinguished as the world turned into the face of the night.

Stranded out in the middle of the ocean, at least he knew no one could catch them. A facetious worry; they were as good as gone now.

It was an unjust irony. He was finally able to be with Ace to his heart's content, and they were going to die in that same situation. The energy was draining from his body in increments that added up fast. His hand held on tighter to Ace's chest, an icy fear gripping his own as he felt how slender was after days of drifting. Even thoughts of escape had left him; neither of them could travel far enough over open water, and trying to steer their makeshift raft had proved fruitless.

The storm had struck during one of their rare encounters, obliterating Smoker's bedroom without hesitation. When he had awoken, Ace was looking down on him, his normal cocky expression replaced by concern. He couldn't even remember their struggle as they were pitched from the ship and thrown to the waves. All he recalled was being slammed into a board before the lightening-filled sky turned black.

Across the sky, the sun extinguished and stars glimmered to life.

Perhaps this was the only setting where he could get what he wanted.
