Survivor XIV is over. I dropped out after round... four, was it? Since it's tradition, I'll go ahead and post my thoughts as to the tournament itself, and go from there.

Draco, collaborating votes is not cheating! There's no rule against it, and everybody does it to some extent or another. The oft-abused R-vote trade is vote collaboration, for instance. (Literal cheating would be something like hacking the boards to edit your early-round votes without anybody knowing or something like that.) I wouldn't even call it abusive, in principle, especially in a team tournament ( ... )

First things first: I mentioned in Mithrigil's journal that I did not believe that the teams involved were cheating: I added that here, and that is my mistake. No, there was no "cheating" involved, since this tournament, unlike most others, did not prohibit collaboration. I would point out, however, that my objection is one of a moral perspective, the 'spirit of the law,' and suchlike.

Locke: I would point out that, firstly, these are my thoughts on the issue. I am disappointed that such tactics are used, and I will not be using them myself. Whether someone else wants to or not is entirely up to them, however, it does not change my own feelings in the least ( ... )

I would also add that, whereas sirlin.net is all well and good for games that have some value of permanency, Survivor is, by its very nature, ethereal: it happens for one week, and then, that system is never used again. (I have yet to see any Survivor use the same rules as any other, which renders the entire exercise somewhat pointless.) If there was a bit more permanency to the game play, then I might be inclined to agree with you, Locke. However, when the only ties between one tournament and the next are the people therein... I question the point of trying to "win," since the victory itself is fleeting and the reputation garnered therefrom is not one that I'd wish to possess. However, if you prefer winning and infamy, then that's entirely your perorgative. Once again, however, it isn't mine, and I still find it distasteful.

Read the rules lately, Draco? krizak August 13 2004, 10:13:09 UTC
I'm compelled to point this one small fact out to you, Draco: there hasn't been a clause in the rule prohibiting collaboration since at least Survivor XI. In fact, of all the tournaments in the archives, the latest tournament to have that clause would be Survivor V (that we know of; the rules of Rurouni Taikai III and Survivor X are lost to us at this point ( ... )
