Hannah said I should post again, so I am!
What's been going on with me lately... work is shit. I find myself doing lots of paperwork, lots of customer support, a little documentation and NO DEVELOPMENT. When I took the job I was told I would be working "on VoIP" and somewhere along the line I think I assumed that I would have something to do that was in some way related to my discipline. Ha. We outsource for software development, which means a contractor does the job that i want to do, And, since the job is such a significant one, cutting the cord with them and handing over development to me is touch and go. But that isn't the worst part. The worst part was my short conversation with my Product Manager today, and the sudden realisation that followed:
"How are you finding the company?"
"Meh. s'okay."
"Just okay?"
"Would really like to doing something development related. Getting sick of paperwork. Sick of Changenote."
"That's nice, but why? Our product is finished, theres nothing left to do and there are no missing features, so there is not development work to be done."
"We could build our own pbx?"
"why? There are existing pbx's on the market"
"To sell as a solution with our product?"
"But why would a customer buy ours over a big name brand? It's like that Asterisk-based Call Manager front end you started - the customer went and bought one so that project was halted. When Graham hired you I questioned the need for another member of staff on VoIP."
And then he wandered off. And to be honest, from a business perspective, I can't fault his reasoning one bit. It's nothing personal but the company doesn't need me to develop anything. They need me to clean up after the mess they made by investigating issues and then passing them on to the contractor to fix, because they work for peanuts and are way more familiar with the firmware (because they wrote it).
So, I'm going to start looking for another job. I refuse to waste my life doing testing when I should be developing and innovating. I think and think and think think think and I need to USE that, not waste it writing emails. The first 6 months of this job kicked ass because I got to do programming work which is my forte, and it was almost like getting a cat into the bath moving me away from my old desk. I hear theres some kind of robotics boom in telford so im going to look there first. Engineers go to my office to retire like Elephants go to a certain place to die. Life is just too damn short to waste in what I now refer to as the Engineer's Graveyard.
Otherwise... I have discovered a new b33r. Theakston Old Peculiar. While I like Guinness, it's become so chemically and sickening over the years i'm beginning to depsise its sheer lack of flavour. A few bottles of this in the freezer, a nice steak, and I am a Happy Monkey. Theakston's is my new baby. ^_^
I also ran my first D&D game. Went ok as far as first-times go - ran over time and I got a few things wrong but they are kinks that can be worked out.
Shisha kicks ass and needs to be smoked moar.
Failed my driving test again. Some twat in a white van sped round the corner doing about 50 in a 30 zone and I didn't see him as I went to change lanes - my examiner had to say stop and I failed on that alone.
Trying to make a killer grixis unearth deck for Standard Constructed which needs a lot more multiples of the Alara Reborn stuff to work (such as Hellspark Elemental) but is probably just under friendly play par otherwise.
I'm bored. Been on kaizen all week and Im tired. My computer has officially died today and I dont know what to do with myself (im on kayleigh's laptop).
I go drink moar b33r now...
