Partly to Flick.
Thank you for lending me Pans Labyrinth. I watched it last night. I found myself being deeply uncertain all the way through what I thought of the film.
It was certainly beautiful, I found it moving, interesting, generally well written and it did what I love, it mixed genres. So why didnt I like it. This is what bugs me. I dont know. The rational part of me (currently living on borrowed time...) says it was a great film. Perhaps it just wasn't 'enjoyable' at times. In places it was 'difficult' to watch. I love it when fairy stories are black... but the backdrop was so bleak it wasn't true. Perhaps I was just expecting a different film. All the same I'm really glad I watched it and want to own a copy myself (when I get paid). It has certainly made me think and it certainly could not be described as typical Hollywood gloss/ dross.
So I think I have to give it a (qualified) yes.
Anyone else have any thoughts on it...?
