Ethnic branding in Inner Mongolia?

Nov 28, 2007 12:57

I wish that I'd seen this article, on the way that the city of Hohhot (the capital of Inner Mongolia - one of the places I went over the October vacation) is using Mongol ethnic culture to promote itself and redefine its identity, while I was still writing my thesis. Nevertheless, it's still an awesome article - especially since the issue of "regionalist rebrandings," or whatever you want to call what my thesis topic was, is clearly much more sensitive in Inner Mongolia than in Chongqing, Shanxi, etc., because of the line that has to be walked between promoting Inner Mongol identity and promoting separatism. For example, I would be extremely surprised to see, say, Urumqi doing something like this.
