13 - Do you prefer canon or fanon when you write? Has writing fanfic for a fandom changed the way you see some or even all of the original source material?
Canon. While some fanon things DO seep in, I don't usually manage wild AU's very well, and have to sort of work around the canon to make things work in my mind by either sliding it in between existing canon events, or explaining it in-text in a way that jives with the original, at least a bit.
I think being in fandom and writing for it has made me think more critically of fandoms. I notice the marginalization of females and characters of color now more than I would have before, but it's honestly difficult to tell if that's fandom at work or just me getting older and more aware of things outside of my own experience, since I've been in fandom in one way or another for over ten years.
14 - Ratings - how high are you comfortable with going? Have you ever written higher? If you're comfortable with NC-17, have you ever been shocked by finding that the story you're writing is G-rated instead?
I'm comfortable going to all ratings, but my stuff usually falls into or below a PG-13 rating. And even my adult rated stories usually skirt AROUND the sex. It's never a conscious I WON'T WRITE SMUT decision, that's just how it seems to happen.
15 - Warnings - What do you feel it most important to warn for, and what's the strangest thing you've warned for in a story?
The basic warnings for the general, common triggers are very important. Non-con, dub-con, shota, graphic sex, violence, death, murder, sexual violence, and spoilery canon events. But I also thing warnings are an organic thing that should be looked at for each individual story. You can't warn for every possible thing, but if there's something in your story that you feel COULD be a problem for someone, then I think it's best to warn, even if it's behind spoiler text.
I DON'T think that things like slash or femmeslash or incest should be warned for, so long as the pairing is also listed. If the pairing is listed as Simon/River, then incest is implied. If the pairing is Sirius/Remus, then obviously it's a slash pairing. I generally think listing a pairing is a good idea because it lets people who only read certain pairings skip or find, as desired.
The warnings for my Inhabits Common Clay are probably the most WTF, when all taken in together. I still think that story gets a lot of hits just because people are baffled by the warnings and pairings list and click to see. Other than that I think the warning for Never After Midnight when it was first posted was "warning for Mogwai abuse", which is probably not something said that often in the Firefly fandom.
