Yay Ladies
So IJ has been down all day today, and part of yesterday, and it's apparently back up for some people now, in a limited fashion, but I can't get to anything except a few journal pages and the main page, and can't get logged in. So I couldn't tag any of my threads or check games.
So I pretty much wasted time watching Fringe and doing Archeology in WoW. But Stacey has been doing a "30 awesome women" meme over in her journal, so I decided to copycat her and do it too. I'm sticking to TV only, to narrow the field, and will do how ever many I feel like per post until I get to thirty.
So yes, I'll start with my first fandoms, sort of, and go with
Buffy Summers
"I may be dead, but I'm still pretty. Which is more than I can say for you."
"I dunno. I think it might be time to put a moratorium on parties in my honor. They tend to go badly. Monsters crash. People die."
"I walk. I talk. I shop. I sneeze. I'm gonna be a fireman when the floods roll back. There's trees in the desert since you moved out, and I don't sleep on a bed of bones."
Joss is not foolproof, and he's had quite a few missteps and questionable decisions. But he does bring on the awesome ladies fairly often. The most obvious is Buffy herself, who was unquestionably iconic.
She also grew and changed and screwed up and I loved her for it. Buffy was strong, and she was capable, and even with her flaws and failings she held onto her friendships, and to herself, even if it was a changing version of herself. Buffy could at times be hard to watch, since her failings were colossal ones, and sometimes it was as much a fault of narrative shortcomings as it was character flaws, but through it all, Buffy stayed a heroine. I've never understood how someone can love Buffy's world and the show but not love Buffy. She's Buffy!
Favorite Moment: A tie between her swordfight scene with Angel at the end of "Becoming Part Two", and her grand moment of declaring who she was at the end of "Anne".
Cordelia Chase
"Whatever is causing the Joan Collins 'tude, deal with it. Embrace the pain, spank your inner moppet, whatever, but get over it. 'Cause pretty soon you're not even gonna have the loser friends you've got now."
"What's going on? Oh, God. Is the world ending? I have to research a paper on Bosnia for tomorrow, but if the world's ending, I'm not gonna bother."
"I finally get invited to a nice place with…no mirrors and lots of curtains…hey! You’re a vampire!"
"Oh, yes, you do. I'm a vision of hotliness, and how weird is that? Mystical comas. You know, if you can stand the horror of a higher power hijacking your mind and body so that it can give birth to itself, I really recommend 'em."
Cordy started out as the vapid bitch-queen, and she grew into so much more than that. She was smart, she was fashionable, she was caring, she worked had and she learned from what she'd been through. By the end run of Buffy, Cordy was throwing herself into danger with snark and style. She had as big a part in saving the world as the rest of the Scooby gang, and from there she moved on to Angel, where she didn't make it as an actress, but came to take on the role that Xander filled for the Scoobies. She was the Heart of Angel Investigations.
There were some parts of Cordelia's story arch on Angel that made me nuts. But in her last episode, they made up for it by giving us back that caring, proactive, capable, awesome Cordy for us to say goodbye to, and that's always how I think of her. Not the parts in the middle that made me cringe.
Favorite Moment: Cordelia's had a lot of awesome moments, but her moment of declaring that she's going to date Xander, lameness and all, in Bewitched, Bothered, & Bewildered never fails to make me laugh.
Zoe Washburne
"Sir? I'd like you to take the helm, please. I need this man to tear all my clothes off."
"Sir, I think you have a problem with your brain being missing."
"River, honey, he's putting the hair away now."
"I'm sorry, you were going to ask me to choose, right? Do you wanna finish?"
Firefly was, for me, a perfect little subspace of TV. It didn't run long enough to have real roadbumps or shorelines that made me cringe. I loved each and every character, and was interested in all of their stories. The ladies on this show were all pretty awesome in very different ways, but when I came down to one, I went with Zoe.
Zoe is stolid and dependable. She's smart and fully capable of leading, as she proves in War Stories, but she's also comfortable enough in her own skin to follow without being threatened. She's unashamedly in love and sexual, and she does her job, and she does it well, always. Zoe is the one person on the ship that no one wants to piss off, and with good reason. Zoe was the reason that Mal could keep going, and while Kaylee was the spirit of Serenity, Zoe was the glue and the one person Mal would always have to lean on. She spoke up when she felt she needed to, and could say more with just a few words than anyone else could in a whole monologue.
Plus she was Gina Torres. So she was automatically awesome.
Favorite Moment: It's a tossup between Zoe clocking YoSaffBridge (who is also an awesome lady) in "Trash", and Zoe and Wash's interrogation scene in "Bushwhacked"
There are a LOT of awesome Joss ladies. Most of them bring the awesome in one way or another, but I didn't want to frontload the list with ALL JOSS LADIES. So honorable mentions to my personal favorites:
Illyria! - Resurrected God-King! Illyria's birth was genuinely heartbreaking, even if you didn't love Fred all that much, and her alien nature was usually genuinely used very well, and Amy Acker did a good job with it. I also just loved the LOOK of her, with the blue and the snake-like movements.
Adelle Dewitt - Dollhouse was the weakest of Joss' shows, in many ways, but it had some great moments. The central character, Echo, was my least favorite most of the time, but by the end of the series run, I came to love Adelle, who was fierce and bitchy and smart, but capable of learning from her mistakes.
Faith Lehane - God, Faith. Faith is the character I love in pretty much everything. I can cross her over with almost any fandom and love her in it. Faith is damaged and fucked up. She does everything wrong. She has superpowers, and skewed moral code, and a serious chip on her shoulder. I love her. I will always love her.
There are others. Willow! Tara! Kaylee! River! But this is my Jossverse list, I think. Next, numbers four through. . . . whatever I get to next time!
Also I just watched the Noir/Musical episode of Fringe. Oliva in that hat = <3!
E.T.A. - Have finished the second season of Fringe, but there's apparently an extra episode called "Unearthed" that is in the extras? Google-fu says it's a FIRST season episode that never aired and then was shown during season two, but does anyone have the skinny on why it didn't air, or where it falls exactly in the timeline, before I watch and confuse myself?
