I like Benka a lot, you guys.

using the prompts below, write a drabble (or whatever) a day for the next 30 days. find someone willing to hit you if you miss a day. look back at the end and go ‘oh! i’m a writer!’.

beginning. accusation. restless. snowflake. haze. flame. formal. companion. move. silver. prepared. knowledge. denial. wind. order. thanks. look. summer. transformation. tremble. sunset. mad. thousand. outside. winter. diamond. letters. promise. simple. future.

Benka stole a scythe under the harvest moon. Instead of rice she cut down imaginary invaders, saving her family as they slumbered - until she swung too far and sliced open her arm.

Benka the warrior wouldn’t scream and collapse, blood spurting between her fingers and glistening black on the moonlit blade. Benka the child did.

Mother bandaged the wound with savage efficiency, anger battling fear in her pinched expression. “Use your tools to their purpose, child!” Her sudden embrace shocked Benka breathless. “Their misuse hurts more than just the wielder.”

(Years later, kneeling before her swords, Benka the warrior remembers.)
