Yuletide Letter - Better Late Than Never I Hope

Dec 02, 2011 23:07

Dear Yuletider,

Firstly, I’m so sorry for keeping you waiting even longer than expected. It’s been one of those months. So you should have recieved my requests by now and I hope they've not caused you to throw yourself into a pit wailing and rending your clothes.  Anyway if you are one of those super-organised people who have already finished their story, feel free to ignore this and carry on - I know I’ll love it - but if you’re feeling like you’d like some more inspiration here I am (also I do not use ip tracking, so feel free should you like to ask me anonymous questions).  I hope that something I've suggested will give you a grain of inspiration, but if not don't worry - I love surprises as well - and what I'd really love is for you to write something that makes you happy and is fun for you - don't worry too much about me.

I don’t really have much to add to the prompts as I’ve probably bored you enough as it is. But in case it helps some of the things I love - bittersweet sad stories, fluffy stories, angst, dark stories, fun, adventures, gangs, friends, silliness, AUs, queer themes, extra moments, character moments, post-canon, old 'married-couple' friendship bickering, dreamers and fantasists, manipulative characters with secret soft spots, timeline crossing, awesome women, mixed up narratives, found families, what ifs. Genfic, slashfic, femmeslashfic, hetfic and polyfic are all loved.

Things I'd prefer not to have - character bashing, woman/queer characters dieing.

But mostly, anything goes.

I hope you have fun - and please feel free to quiz me anonymously here if you'd like more info on anything or through the yuletide mods.

You're awesome.

PROMPTS FOR THE POTENTIALLY CURIOUS:

Super Dictionary

Despite my knowing next to nothing about actual comics, Super Dictionary absolutely broke my brain this year after finding it on cracked.com (http://www.cracked.com/article_19446_the-6-most-wtf-special-edition-comics-ever-released_p3.html / http://www.comicsalliance.com/2011/03/22/super-dictionary-dc-comics / http://strangevisitations.blogspot.com/2007/06/super-dictionary.html)  - so I would adore literally anything from it. Whether you want to write in the unforgettable style of the dictionary or want to do something completely different - crack, angst, dark fic - anything goes.

Similarly I’d love you to explore any characters that grab your interest, though I picked a handful of my favourites above - so if you want to explore how Robin seems to be tied up in pseudo-sexual positions every other frame (there’s definitely a reason Batman has dressed him in tights and pants, and keeps sending him out at night with no weapons); or how Hawkman and Hawkgirls ‘destined to be forever’ relationship has definitely left the honeymoon period (I’m kind of imagining you could do a whole series of couple counselling sessions based on the fucked up relationships in the Dictionary - Superman and Lois are similarly spectacular); or the fact that Green Lantern is having some sort of duck related breakdown - I’d be grinning from ear to ear (bonus Batman being an ass would absolutely fill me with glee).

Third Star

Ah, Third Star, you beautiful, funny, heartbreaking movie - I adore all four of the main guys (not to mention tiny angry Welsh angel boy) but my favourite has to be Davy. So controlled and good natured and loyal and desperately trying to make the trip work. I love him (plus the fact that I adore Tom Burke doesn’t hurt). So I’d love anything with Davy at its centre - whether it’s a story from before James’ illness or during the trip or whether it’s focusing on the fallout afterwards (a story about Davy helping to pack up James’ house with his parents might be interesting, for example). I have to say that I see Davy as being unrequitedly in love with James, probably since college and probably with James’ knowledge, but not in any tragic way. However, if you prefer a more requited relationship between the two or just friendship - I’m equally happy with that. Anything honestly. Also if it gives you inspiration, Birds Fly Backwards by Ed Harcourt reminds me of both the film and particularly of Davy.

King Lear

I have a real soft spot for Shakespeare’s minor characters, who nearly always have their own tiny character journeys. And Oswald from King Lear is definitely a favourite - I’ve seen him portrayed so many ways - as a toadying servant, a lover of Goneril’s spurned for Edmund, and a recent favourite of mine, a potentially noble character torn between loyalty to his king and to his mistress. I love how he goes from a position of definite cowardice and doubt, to someone both untroubled at the thought of killing Gloucester and capable of doing it. I’m also fascinated by his relationship with Kent, who for a character who apparently has only just met him seems to have a deeply personal hatred for him (I love imagining that they have a personal history, a favourite being Kent as Oswald’s long un-met father, following the practice of young sons being fostered by other families). I am also perfectly happy to see Oswald shipped with Goneril or Edmund (Edmund seems pretty much willing to sleep with anyone to gain power/knowledge after all). Anything exploring Oswald would be superb.

16th Century RPF

I recently read a slightly questionable history book called ‘Who Killed Kit Marlowe’ - whilst I was somewhat doubtful of the history (so many unexplained leaps of judgement) but I did fall in love with the idea of Christopher Marlowe sweeping across Europe, as a stylish, clever, gay spy. So I’d love something exploring that, whether it’s a serious look at spying at the time; or a cracky James Bond style romp, with William Shakespeare as the latest Bond girl. Have fun.
