A brown-haired little boy of about nine years of age goes running onto the pitch of the prestigious Santiago Bernabeu. His face lights up with the brightest of smiles as he looks up at the empty stands around him. He seems almost dwarf-like in the middle of the giant stadium and yet he can feel himself grow taller as he takes place between the two goal posts. The spirits of former Merengues surround him as he imagines his bright future playing for the first team of the greatest club in the whole world, Real Madrid.

“Iker, we’re going to get in trouble,” a seven year old girl interrupts his dream world. She hesitantly steps onto the pitch, dragging a teddy bear behind her while her jet black hair blows into her face because of the wind.

Iker looks over at the tiny waif of a girl, smiling fondly; she was always following him around no matter where he went. At first it used to annoy him because the other boys would tease him about his shadow but now he cared too much about her to care about what the other boys said. Like his mama said they were just jealous that pretty girls don’t like to hang out with them while they loved to hang out with Iker.

“Imagine it, Emilia,” Iker says, not being able to keep the excitement out of his voice, “me playing for Real Madrid and you cheering me on in the stands.”

Emilia blinks up at him in confusion, her honey eyes taking in his boyish smile but not understanding the excitement behind it. “You’re nine; you can’t play for Real Madrid.”

“Not yet,” Iker is quick to point out, taking her tiny face between his hands. “But I’m already playing in the youth system and one day I’ll be on the first team. You’ll still be around, right? Cheering me on?”

“Si,” Emilia replies instantly, smiling back at him even if she didn’t completely understand it, his happiness was contagious. “I’ll always be your best friend even when you’re the greatest keeper in the world.”

Iker chuckles at her newfound enthusiasm, hugging her tightly against him and lifting her up in the air to spin her around the large pitch. Emilia’s giggles echo around the Santiago Bernabeu has she drops her favorite teddy bear in favor of wrapping her arms around Iker. Two sets of parents step out of the tunnel to watch their children on the pitch and smile fondly at the boy and girl’s bond.

They were just two young kids right now but no one, not even they, could ever imagine how they would conquer their respective worlds together.
