Tell you the truth, this is ironic. The fire nation and earth kingdom fought for 100 years, and no(w) a firebender and earthbender are brothers.

TV Tropes Wild Mass Guessing:
To go along with the top: Korra will be the daughter of an interracial couple:
Reading that last line of a "'familiar' Fire Nation/Water Tribe couple", Korra's parents will be as such, and not just a person from the Fire Nation and the other from the Water Tribe. They will actually be benders, and the decision to live at either the Southern Water Tribe or the Fire Nation fell on "the element Korra shows signs of bending". Which makes sense, as Korra will need to learn how to bend said element (though the Southern Tribe was picked over the Northern Tribe because it was either the home of the waterbending parent or it was a place of preference since Katara came from there, and Katara may still be alive and living there to be Korra's waterbending teacher.)

This WMG can work as a reason for Korra being a fully realized Avatar (remember, all she needs to learn is Air). At first she'll think that, with a firebending dad (or mom) she can bend fire and water (as a little kid she can be misinformed in that way). Her friends would tell her that she's talking crazy, so she'll try to prove it by messing with a fire pit. She ends up accidentally making the fire so big, at first gleeful that she can firebend, but lacking the control to actually maintain it she almost burns a house down. It alerts the whole tribe as they move to put it out. Korra would be scrutinized by her friends at first, and their worried parents as well, and she would think of herself as a freak because bending more than one element would be unnatural. Her parents would also be accused for having an unnatural bender for a child, which leads to the tribe elders (or whoever reveals the identity of the Avatar in the Southern Tribe) that Korra is the next Avatar. While a bit earlier than planned, it would be because it was bad form to keep Korra under the delusion that she is different and a 'freak'. To prevent a similar incident Korra is taught firebending simultaneously with waterbending by her firebending parent. Skill and a fast learning ability will then lead her to learn Earth before she set out to learn Air (note that I am aware this is out of the usual order, though it may be due to the paranoia that Korra might accidentally set fire to something else if she doesn't at least learn control. If anything her firebending dad/mom could teach her how to control it, and she goes to the Fire Nation to learn how to bend effectively from one of the best. Insert the Zuko descendant/Dante Basco character WMGs here.)

LOOK AT THIS BB AVATAR WITH HER OUTIE BELLY BUTTON AND HER GRUMPY FACES AND HER SERIOUS, INTENSE EXPRESSION OF CONCENTRATION AS SHE FIREBENDS, AWWWWW. Probably everyone pinched her chubby cheeks and she hated them quietly deep down inside. Also: loudly, outside.

TINY FIREBENDING AVATAR. I hope there is also PUPPYCUB NAGA.

I had to reblog this just for the commentary. It made me snort my coffee with giggles.

About this Legend of Korra stuff:
Now, clearly, I am quite excited! And it’s awesome to see the fandom get kicked up over just a trailer and some design pics (just imagine what the internet will look like once the actual episodes air, good lord.) But I personally have to take a moment to express how mind-blowing it is that we’re looking at a series with a protagonist who

has dark skin
is a woman
is a woman with dark skin
is a muscular woman
is a woman who, while quite attractive, is not just attractive but also evidently a badass (plus whatever other qualities we’ll discover once we see her within a narrative)
and, perhaps most importantly, is not all of these things as a sidekick or member of a huge team but as the main character of a show with her name right in the title.

It’s kind of sad how any of those things are considered remarkable, but it’s also spectacular that they’re happening. It’s evidence of how awesome and it-getting Bryan Konietzko and Michael Dante DiMartino are. In an industry (children’s television specifically, entertainment in general broadly) where so many people insist “female characters can’t lead an action story” or “general audiences can’t relate to dark-skinned characters,” Mike and Bryan have decided to say “screw that, Korra is awesome and we’re going to tell her story.”

The odds of anyone involved in the production of this show ever reading this are impossibly slim, but just in case they ever do: Thank you.

GOD this show is going to be a fucking eyegasm sdfhdsf

MAYBE UNPOPULAR OPINIONS: I looove how modern it is. Think about the differences between 1830 and 1900- between 1900 and 1970. Shit can change REALLY FAST. It makes it feel less like a story, fixed for narrative consistency, and more like a real, shifting universe.

seconding what @ayries said because this is probably going to be something that i will fall in love with when i watch this show: how this world is changing. it makes sense because, uhmn, just look at how things have changed throughout history; just see how fast things progressed in the USA from 1900 ‘til now when it comes to technology, fashion, etc. yes, sometimes the progression is slower and at other times it is ridiculously fast, and korra definitely shows how in a short span in time a world can grow and change and alkfjdj;fla I AM GOING TO LOVE SEEING HOW THINGS HAVE CHANGED FROM THE WORLD WE LOVED IN A:TLA TO THE WORLD IT IS NOW.

YES. You guys I love worldbuilding/anthropology sooooo much I can’t even, and Avatar’s is some of my favorite. Like, when it was on I was kind of obsessed with the Fire Nation as a culture that had been at war on three fronts for a century (yet accomplished relatively little). First off, why they committed to the war in the first place - because with firebending they’re already closer on a technological level to combustion-based machinery, which put the FN at the forefront of an industrial revolution with only the resources of a small island. Then they go to war to fund this growth and the next three generations grow up as soldiers living abroad, their home population sparse and suffering under a stagnant militaristic culture. Elsewhere you have the decimated Southern Water Tribe having lost all but the barest bones of their culture and utterly isolated from their northern cousins (who are cut off from everyone else), and large portions of the Earth Kingdom (lol I have such a bone to pick with that name; it may have been a single political body before the war but by the time ATLA rolls around it’s a bunch of city-states with barely any connection beyond sharing a continent; better to call it the Earth Kingdoms) have been ravaged and colonized by the FN. And yeah, Ba Sing Se’s isolationist policy which has bred a formalistic society that I’m thinking now is really the yin to the Fire Nation’s messed up yang.

So to set a story in this world 70 years in the future doesn’t only invite the normal progress 70 years can make, but the massive change resulting from the bursting of a century’s cultural bottleneck. We already know that there are brothers bending different elements, indicating mixed parentage; and we know that Korra is a waterbender first which means that unlike Katara, she must have had some sort of support or education. So now think of a Ba Sing Se without walls, or the Southern Water Tribe rebuilding their architecture like in the north, or the probable baby boom and renaissance that the Fire Nation experienced under Zuko’s rule, or what technological advances could be made with pooled resources - this will be a world very, very unlike that which we’ve previously seen. And that is amaaaaziiiiiiiiiiiiing.

dssjkdfshjsd cannot wait

^^^^^^^ ALL OF THIS

(also I edited the image description because I am INCREDIBLY TAKEN with that dude’s outfit and I feel everyone else should be too)
but yeah, um. it’s as if somebody sat down and said ‘what sort of things does Re like? fantasy, early 20th century history, brown-skinned indigenous heroines, diverse representations of Asian aesthetics, the politics of deviance and resistance, urban spaces…yeah, I think we can do that.’
it is basically hitting ALL MY BUTTONS
literally the only thing I can think of that would possibly improve this is textual queerness. and maybe another female main character, but…I have faith that that will happen eventually!

The sheer amount of world building that has gone into this cartoon is simply staggering. Pile on top of that excellent character and story arcs, beautiful art and genius writing across the board and it’s no wonder that many hail AtLA and LoK (already) as the best animated series. Period.

What are they looking for idk idk you guys

In my pre-show headcanon, Korra and Bolin are the goofiest of goofs together and they like to pick on Mako all the time.

Avatar Aang told her about this great getaway trick once, all they need is a lemur and a bedsheet! Shut up, Mako, of course the cops will believe it’s a ghost!!!!

yes, yes, yes, OH MY GOD, YES. mako can’t grow a beard to save his life, so korra and bolin walk around stroking fake beards stuck to their chins and humming thoughtfully as they confer re: the serious issue that is mako’s tragic inability to grow an even mustache. mako hates them so much sometimes.

Except Korra knows better than to actually glue the beard to her face, because she has it on very good authority that that stuff DOESN’T COME OFF.

Bolin doesn’t know, though - so he has that fake beard for a good long while, and whenever Korra goes into the Avatar State, Aang rolls around laughing at him.

I’M TRYING NOT TO REBLOG EVERY KORRA THING BECAUSE I AM SURE IT IS ALL OVER EVERYONE’S DASH ALREADY BUT

Tenzin

Notes from the panel:

Aang and Katara had 3 children, all airbenders.
The youngest of these children was Tenzin (seen above).
Tenzin and his family currently live in a sort of “Airbender Sanctuary/Island/Temple - that you saw briefly as the second setting of the trailer” within Republic City. Meaning, I assume, that island with the giant statue of Aang is the Airbender Sanctuary.
Tenzin tries to be a very calm and collected “Zen master” sort of guy, but his children regularly break his calm - especially Meelo.

I’m having fun adding my notes from attending the panel.

YESSSSS I am looking forward to Tenzin and how he pretends to be ultra chill but is not-so-secretly a BALL OF EMOTIONS just like his parents. Also I demand he be the best daddy.

HE IS THE BEST DADDY OK IT IS ALREADY THAT WAY IN MY MIND

Korra Predictions

Korra’s firebending is for a reason. I feel like she’s got such a strong personality that once she was aware of her ability to bend other elements, she decided she had to tackle her opposite head on. Fire and Water are much more similar in style (flowing vs choppy) than air and earth (neutral versus negative. IE wait and respond but meeting things head on, versus avoidant and defensive.) I don’t know if Korra was told “early” about her bending, but I believe she’s 17 so if she was told at 16, she’s had a year at the very least.
The love triangle will be unexpected somehow. I really doubt it will be Bolin/Korra/Mako. I’m expecting it will involve a third player somehow. I don’t believe the brothers will fight over Korra. One of them is interested (potentially) but I doubt both. If Mako is interested, I doubt he’ll be forward with it. If Bolin is the one interested, I’m sure his brother will be rolling his eyes at the vaguely idol worship style affections his brother has. Korra may be interested in someone else entirely, OR the triangle has nothing to do with these three.
Korra gets in on the pro-bending team because she’s the Avatar (which is why Bolin is like “Hey! Avatar.” There’s no rules about Korra bending multiple elements because there’s been no Avatar for the last 16-17 years. The opponents in the tournament will be upset that Mako and Bolin now have an unfair advantage due to the fact that they have the Avatar. Mako and Bolin purposely play with this loophole in the hopes of winning, which is why they take Korra.
Korra likes to break rules.
Bolin and Mako either have a sweet mom or are raised by someone else/orphaned. They have a reason for doing pro-bending, and I feel like it’s for their family or to keep themselves in the green.
Korra either encourages Meelo to wreak havoc, or is extremely annoyed by him.
She bounces between the United Republic and Tenzin’s temple. The trio make their way to someplace cold, possibly Korra’s home in the south.
Pemma loves Tenzin but she’s done with airbending kids bouncing literally off the walls, and hopes the last one doesn’t bend at all. Her personality will be similar to the wife in The Emperor’s New Groove.
Amon will be someone surprising when he’s finally revealed his face.
Korra gets everyone into trouble. Or she gets everyone out of it.
We will see a cheongsam/qipao
The endgame ship will NOT be obvious from episode one.
We’ll get a similar opening narration done by either Korra or one of the brothers.
I will probably not call them the Krew but instead GAangsters. I MEAN WE NEED SOMETHING KORRA THEMED BUT…I’ll end up calling them the Krew. xD

Avatar fandom: a brief, entirely accurate, not remotely fictional timeline

But firstly, if you're not averse to Legend of Korra spoilers, and you haven't already, I strongly recommend going and reading the LJ comments to my post yesterday. (Assuming, of course, that LJ is working.)

And on a related note, certain people (YOU KNOW WHO YOU ARE) may benefit from the Mandarin translation of "melody".

Anyway, this was my morning yesterday.

Approx 9am: A photograph of the new Korra poster is revealed, featuring Korra and two attractive teenage boys, one an earthbender, one a firebender.

9.01: Fandom starts shipping them.

9.20: Tweets from the panel at Comic-Con reveal they are brothers.

9.21: Eight tenths of fandom stop shipping them. A much smaller percentage of people start.

9.30: It is revealed that the chief of police in Republic City Union is Toph's daughter.

9.31: A horde of rabid Tophzula shippers I start to worry about my OTP.

9.20: It is established beyond doubt that Chief Bei Fong is Tophzula's Sokka-baster-baby. So that's okay, then.

9.40: The revelation that Tenzin has a wife and children causes three Tenzin/Korra shippers to flounce.

9.45: The revelation that Tenzin is the youngest of three causes eighteen Zutara shippers to flounce.

9.50: The first Korra/Mako v Korra/Bolin shipwar commences.

FIVE HOURS LATER: Fandom begins to ship Korra/Bei Fong.

TWELVE HOURS LATER: Less awesome parts of fandom wonder how a blind woman can have a child. They are smacked down.

THIRTEEN HOURS LATER: Even less awesome parts of fandom complain that Korra looks like a lesbian. They are smacked down.

THIRTY-SIX HOURS LATER: The first Korra/Bei Fong prompt goes up at the kink meme. Yes, that was mine.

Actual proper news, or at least handy links to same, can be found here.

oh my god look at the difference in animation fjdfkl

Look at the way that Pakku has a…… reeeeally big head compared to Korra. And how her water has all these splashes and waves and his is just a little strand. And she has just these extra little body movements and it just looks… amazing. I mean don’t get me wrong, the original animation is stunning and all too, but look how far the quality has come dvnskvs,;;sdfklj

The comparison here is one I (not to mention countless other fans ^) will constantly examine. It certainly appears that in the evolution of bending styles, Korra and Waterbenders of her age seem to have adopted a more aggressive style, borrowing motions from Earthbending and Firebending. Her bending seems to have more raw power, whereas Pakku’s incredibly refined and traditional style clearly displays greater finesse and control. I for one think the progression, evolution, and fusion of the bending disciplines is a thrilling prospect. For thousands of years, it would seem, styles of bending were developed and maintained by the tutelage of Masters. Now in the modern, conglomerate city of the United Republic, there are benders of all nations competing, training, and learning together. A cross-over of style and technique was inevitable, and wholly realistic. I really hope the old styles haven’t died out, but, needless to say, I certainly welcome the new.

^^^^^^^^^ BLESS THE COMMENTARY.

commentary <3

From what little we see of Korra’s Waterbending, I have to be reminded of Katara’s more passion-driven bending in her fight with Pakku. This is not at all a bad thing.

wooooow omg

http://hamartiaaa.tumblr.com/post/8182131792/im-just-going-to-go-ahead-and-write-down-all-of-my
I’m just going to go ahead and write down all of my Korra conjectures. One year later, let’s see how this goes.

*Korra figured out how to bend fire before anyone told her she was the Avatar. Reason? The development art we’ve seen includes a firebending five year old Korra. I can just picture this determined little girl messing around one day reenacting her favorite part of The Boy In The Iceberg, (which has hit the Southern Water Tribe circuit by now, I’m sure) and suddenly managing to bend fire, all on her own. Granted, she probably had very little control over it, so on some days she would sneak out onto the ice to practice. This also explains why she seems to bend little else in the trailers - she’s extremely comfortable with it, despite it being her natural opposite, since she’s been practicing it for over ten years now.

*Bolin really wants to be a metalbender. I mean, imagine you have these elite cops swooshing around the city on their wires. Every little boy’s dream, right? Especially if that kid’s an earthbender growing up in United Republic. Unfortunately, Bolin doesn’t have the focus required to bend metal - not yet. I’m hoping that as he develops over the course of the show, he acquires the discipline needed to do it.

*Mako’s scarf will catch fire at some point. Because it has to. He’s a firebender, and he’s got a long dangly piece of fabric hanging off of him? Rule of Funny practically commands it. Actually screw just catching on fire - that scarf has a whole mess of trouble coming for it, you just wait.

*Tenzin’s two siblings dislike him. Why? Going off of the assumption that Tenzin is the only airbender of the family, imagine what that means for how Dad’s going to treat him. I can imagine the other two resent him because not only is he the littlest and therefore gets the most attention of the lot, but Daddy Aang is going to want to get him good and trained up so that the discipline won’t die out. A rift between the siblings is only natural.

*Bolin will be a Makorra shipper. I really don’t like the idea of a love triangle that includes brothers. I see Bolin as constantly trying to get his brother to cheer up and seeing Korra as just the girl to do that.

*Korra will get the team kicked out of Pro-Bending when she accidentally bends something other than water in the arena as a natural reaction to being attacked. Or maybe just because she really, really wants to win.

*The Equalists will conduct a raid on the Pro-Bending facility. This is fairly logical, because the place contains a concentration of very powerful benders. Also, it looks like that is what’s happening in the trailer, though I could be wrong
-------------------------------------------------------------------------
appingo:
Another weird Korra thought
I just got done watching the panel and there was something that Mike or Bryan said, or maybe it’s just this vibe I got from all the other discussion going on and such and them bringing up who’s coming in for the second season of production (Lauren Montgomery yes!), and the fact that the new species of lemur plays a bigger part in the ‘second half’.

It just feels to me that the first half of the show, or the first season, is going to take place in the new Republic City, then the second half of the show is going to have a more ‘world scale’ feel, and it’s going to have more of a travel feel to it.

Typical in Avatar style, I think the end of the first season is going to end with something bad, a cliffhanger of sorts, and the new Team Avatar is going to have to flee from Republic City.

(Ashton is getting so many ideas from this new series)

askamon:
OOC: THEORY TIME
Okay, so I have just been on the Avatar Wiki, and as it turns out, United Republic isn’t a new name for Republic City. It was referenced once in Comic Con while Republic City is mentioned six times. So I came up with a theory:

United Republic is, in fact, a nation. It is what became of the Fire Nation colonies. Instead of facing resistance from the Fire Nation colonists who have lived there for 100 years and also creating thousands, if not millions, of homeless refugees, Aang and Zuko established a new nation which became the melting pot it is today.
United Republic also reminds me of the United States, this just draws another parallel: The Fire Nation took the land from the people of the Earth Kingdom. This land eventually became a new nation which is a melting pot of cultures. This resembles the United States after splitting off from Britian.

Today while at work I decided that the Gaang would found the Pro-Bending Tournament.

And I don’t mean like “Oh shit man those Equalists are really starting to get serious we should do something to play up public support for benders”

No fuck that shit

While they were out doing important Gaang-ish things like building United Republic City or stopping pissed off Ozai loyalists or trying to get the Equalists to sit the fuck down already or riding giant animals, Toph would get really bored and start throwing rocks at Zuko

And Zuko’s all like “WOULD YOU KNOCK THAT SHIT OFF TOPH IT IS REALLY ANNOYING AND DISTRACTING I CANNOT FOCUS WHILE YOU ARE THROWING ROCKS AT MY HEAD”

And Top is like “*cackles* *throws another rock*”

And finally Zuko just loses his shit and starts Firebending at her

And Toph isn’t gonna take that shit, naturally, so she starts Earthbending back

And Aang is like “ksldjf GUYS WE HAVE TO DEAL WITH ENOUGH OF THIS FROM OTHER PEOPLE CAN’T WE GET ALONG GUYS WHY ARE WE FIGHTING GUUUUYYYYS 8(((“

Katara tries to be reasonable but she gets caught in the crossfire when Zuko almost roasts her so she’s all “ZUKO FOR FUCK’S SAKE” and then she tag teams with Toph to kick Zuko’s ass

Then Aang is like “WHY ARE WE FIGHTING” and he’s sad and he tries to help Zuko out by deflecting some of Katara and Toph’s attacks but then Haru comes along and is all “GUYS IS THIS A GAME GUYS I WANT TO PLAY GUYS WHAT ARE WE DOING WHAT ARE THE RULES” and he teams with Zuko and Aang because he’s an Earthbender and they need one of those

And they stop when Toph realizes she’s hungry because Katara can’t be arsed to fight three benders on her own especially when one of them is her boyfriend. Toph decides later that her and Katara won because it was two on three with the Avatar on the side with the “three” and her and Katara were still holding their own so fuck you Zuko I’ll throw rocks at whoever I damn well please

Aang is sad because everyone is fighting and no one listens to him but Katara makes out with him later and he feels better

And then the next day they all realize that they had actually missed fighting with bending so they do it again.

And it becomes a thing. The end.
