The One where I talk about England, pt 1: York...

Jan 11, 2010 21:26

Sooo, I went to England for the last couple of days, and it was amaaaaaaaaaaaazing!!!!

Haven't seen this much natural snow since I was in the Alps when I was wee, and the fact that I took my Converse with me as my only pairs of shoes, bar the high heels for the theatre, was not really the best choice ;)

Christoph and me got along brilliantlyll, and it was great to see Simon again :D Didn't realize that I actually missed his sarcasm and scathing nature that much, but the banter was flowing, as usual, and it seemed like we had never been apart...

We had trouble getting out of Frankfurt Airport due to the weather in Manchester, and S was stuck in Munich, but we all made it to England at around midnight...

On the plane...

Snow at Manchester Airport...

Simon, looking charmin' as ever :D...

The campus of York University...

Old Viking Town of York...

York at night...

The Minster of York...

More York- impressions...

We arrived in York Tuesday night and were at Simon's place at around 2am, slept in the next morning and then strolled over to the campus of York University where Simon is currently working on his diploma thesis *something to do with Java, he's explained it to me a couple of times, but it is over my head ;)*, had lunch there *which later made me sick to my stomach, literally* and after that took the bus into town...

Picked up the movie tickets *I had convinced the lads to go see Sherlock Holmes with me* and went shopping...

Topshop lost a few pieces of jewellry to me, Christoph severly disliked it and shopping is just not Simon's thing ;) We looked for a coat for Christoph, but none fit, but luckily, H&M always come through for you, so he was quite satisfied at the end of the day, laden down with a bag filled with a really nice coat and a really nice scarf *and the knowledge that his clothes were the only things that Simon and me could agree on, fashion- wise ;)*...

Despite the fact that my thighs are now a tad bit too big for the 28" that I usually wear in jeans at Topshop, I was quite successful *and now I have a very good motivation to start working out and losing weight... I'm planning on going to Ireland after my bday, if my History- exam is not too soon after, and then I want to comfortably fit into my skinny falres again!!! Not the old pair that I have worn for the last four years, but a new pair...*

Of course I got my magazines *paper is veryyyyyy heavy, what with me getting Vogue, Elle, Empire, Empire Special Edition, Total Film, Star, Heat, OK & Hello* and HMV is having an amazing sale... The Friends- box is currently down to £40 and I could have easily spend a lot of money, just buying dvds... But I refrained myself from spending it all in one place and just got the Band of Brothers- dvd... *I wonder why... :P*

Also, I had a reason why I did only take a sports- bag with me and filled it with clothes *also was quite proud of myself for the fact that I managed to pack clothes for the trip that weighed only 10kg... Including toilettries!!!* The Friends- box never would have fitted anywhere, but that did not mean that I had to stop staring longinly at it and trying to find a way of getting it :P

I even went to the Shop whose Name shall NOT be spoken, to get soap for fischlich... And then I bought the Bob- box, kinda like a consolation prize ;)

York as a city is beautiful, as you can hopefully see in the pictures... The snow put a muted quality to the overall scene, but I was very impressed... It is just the right size for a city, kinda like Karlsruhe, with the historical flair of Heidelberg... Unfortunately we were unable to walk the city wall, since it was closed down due to the weather...

On that same evening, we went to see SH, and were all left a tad bit disappointed, especially me, since I had had such high hopes... Jude Law rocks the boat, he is absolutely amazing, the music is really good and RDJ is just so hot that my ovaries would have exploded had I felt better...

But other than that?

It was a good version of Holmes as a character, they definitely did some stuff with him that has not been done before and it was not so much over the top... But I just think that they should have adapted a story rather than fabricate something that is flimsy at best... The plot was see- through thin, and while Mark Strong was good, Blackwood did not have the chance, in my eyes, to really develop as nasty a persona as he is said to be... Rachel McAdams was there, but nothing more... Yes, it was the RDJ- show, more or less, but JL more than held his own with him...

I will see the sequel, simply to see those two play off each other, because they are what makes this movie actually watchable...

And the moustache looks very good on JL... RDJ's body is banging and I was drooling, though wished that especially the pillow- scene could have been a bit longer... ;)

Just for fun, have some photos :P

After the film I felt sick and we decided to not go to the pub, and just strolled areound before getting a taxi back home where we watched some Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert before falling asleep... *I got sick once we had gotten home :(*

On Thursday, we took our time as well, which was partly my fault because I still felt like shit, and then just explored the old city centre, visited the Minster and the old buildings that make out the core of York... The lads went down to the pub after we had dinner, but I stayed in and wrote in my diary after packing my stuff...

Friday found us getting up very early to get to the train station in time, only to have the train be delayed due to technical problems...

Ah well, eventually it arrived *wasn't actually tooooo late* and off we were to London...

*Part 2 will be posted tomorrow, with London and lots of squeeing... ;)*
