Every year, David Sinclair goes to the San Diego Comic Convention.
He has done so since he first went to it, which was his fourteenth birthday present, given to him by his brother, who just helped feed his younger brother’s growing comic obsession much to his parents’ consternation. At least that is what David thought at first until he found out that his parents had paid for the tickets, not his brother.
Since then he has been going every year, saving up his money all year if he had to.
He loves this gathering of fans, freaks, geeks and nerds.
He is one of them, and while he hides this persona in his public life well, when in San Diego his inner geek comes out to play.
Here he can talk to fellow fans, rave and rant, attend all the panels that he can and get autographs and photos, if he is really lucky.
He is what you would call a fanboy and when at Comic Con, he is proud of it.
He drives down to the city so that he does not have to worry about weight like he would if he was he flying and for the last couple of years he has even had a driving companion whom he actually really likes, which makes this all the sweeter.
The first time Claudia went to Comic Con with him, she was a bit taken aback but soon fell in love with the atmosphere, energy and, most of all, the panels, most of all. When they went to the Iron Man- panel in 2007, on her first visit, she saw Jon Favreau, one of her favourite people in Hollywood. She was even more fangirlish than David himself, which was a fun thing to watch, especially since she wigged out about the director rather than the leading man, as most of the women seemed to. Not that he minded, and it also showed him that she had a special taste, which made her all the more awesome on his book.
Until she started squealing about Robert Downey, Jr, too.
In later panels, her squealing was rivalling that of other women, too, while he was playing it cool while on the inside he was just as giddy as her.
He never goes there in costume, he does not have the time to prepare them and in all fairness, he is so rarely in casual clothes that they almost feel like a disguise anyways.
Here he can wear his old Batman- shirt, or the washed- out one with the big Star Wars- quote without getting a amused comment from one of his buddies, Colby mainly.
It is almost a rule that he always returns with a couple of more shirts.
And comics and posters and memorabilia and no money.
But that is fine with him.
David does not have the time to spend his money outrageously in other places, so he is fine with splurging during the couple of days of Comic Con.
David has been going to Comic Con since he was fourteen. And he will continue to go, he is sure, until he either dies, or Comic Con is no more. He hopes it is the former because he wants his future kids to go, too, for as long as they can.
