The missing piece

I've been working on a 550-piece puzzle with a safari animal theme. On Monday night, I noticed that I might be missing a piece, one whose shape I call "Little Man." I only had about 8 pieces left in that shape, and none matched a hole at the bottom of the puzzle. Last night, I put the 549th piece in place, and began tearing the living room apart, looking for that missing piece. I asked Jace for his help in finding the piece, and he ignored. About an hour later, my father called so we could talk about our travel plans this weekend. I mentioned I had nearly finished a puzzle, but was bummed out because a piece was missing. I glanced at the puzzle board, and realized I was looking at a completed puzzle.
My shit of a son owned up to taking the piece on Monday night, and then he waited until I left the living room to put it in place. When I confronted him about it, he responded by laughing and telling me "You'll never finish a puzzle while I'm in the house."
It reminds me of coming home from high school basketball practice, looking forward to finishing a puzzle with shells that had about 30-40 loose pieces left. Instead, I got home to discover my little sister had "kindly" finished the puzzle for me.

In other news, last night I apparently forgot how to boil an egg. I covered them with water, brought the water to a boil and then stuck a lid on the pot, turned the heat off and set a 20-minute timer. I transferred the eggs to cool water and then the cartons, and realized I'd boiled 19. Since I love hard-boiled eggs, I decided having one would be a nice bedtime snack. I smacked it on a napkin to start the peeling process, and ended up with a soggy, gooey mess. All the eggs went back to the pan to be completely cooked.

I swear I'm losing it, since I got confused about the days of the week yesterday. While putting the puzzle together, I passed the time by watching "Snatch" before my TV shows came on. Thinking it was Wednesday, I was waiting until 8 p.m., and it wasn't until about a quarter too that I remembered it was Tuesday. This meant I missed most of a new NCIS episode. Hopefully I can watch it on-line. The CBS website is irritating. I've missed the first few episodes of "The Mentalist" and hoped to watch them on-line. No dice. CBS only seems to offer little snippets of the show, not complete episodes.

This morning I'm finding copy for the weekend "Lifestyles" section of the paper, that I am responsible for putting together. It is both fun and frustrating to gather copy and art and make decisions about what readers will see. I especially like picking out the food page. This week, my choices for the travel page were a story about a monastery, Arizona wineries, Cold War escape tunnels in Berlin and a story on old Soviet sites to visit. I opted for the Arizone story, it had the best pictures. The front will be either a program that catches stray cats and "fixing" them before turning them loose again or a story about options for older people who are laid off. The Family page will not have much art this week. I have a plethora of stories to choose from, but none have photos.

work, jace
