Olivia had been standing in the rain outside their apartment looking up at the window for the last twenty minutes, the rain had long soaked through her clothes and her body felt numb but it wasn’t from the cold. People were walking past and staring but she didn’t care, they were just carrying on with their lives as usual. Olivia’s on the other hand had just come to an unexpected and abrupt halt.
It had been only an hour since she had the left the hospital. Elliot had dropped her off and insisted on coming up but she simply requested to be left alone. The fact of the matter was that she couldn’t bare to go up there and unlock the door knowing the beautiful blond ADA wouldn’t be there to greet her with that radiant smile of hers.
Nothing yet had really sunk in, she was not ready to acknowledge the unfathomable loss, all she could think about was the time when they were out in the rain together laughing after their first date, it was on that night five years ago that the detective had stood there on the same street and fallen head over heels in love with Alex.
None of that seemed to matter now though, the ADA was gone and Olivia was once again on her own, without the guiding light that was Alexandra Cabot by her side to help fight the demons that plagued her day after day.
In a matter of minutes her wife had been taken away from her, callously shot by a family member of a defendant who had been charged with the rape and murder of five women in the city. Upon receiving a call at the precinct Olivia had immediately made her way to the hospital, only to learn that she was too late.
Now here she was under the thunderous grey skies of New York City, trying to summon the courage and strength to make her way inside, whilst at the same time wondering why fate or even a higher power had dealt her this cruel hand.
At last making her way into the building, the detective slowly took the elevator and walked until she found herself standing outside the door to their apartment. Her shaking hands fumbled with the keys before she managed to finally unlock it.
Darkness greeted her as she entered; reaching for the light switch she became uncertain of how she would react once the place was illuminated. She was soon assaulted by the sheer facts of Alex’s presence as she looked around. The remnants of their shared breakfast remained on the dinning room table along with the beautiful blonde’s silk cream blouse that had been discarded on the back of the chair after Olivia had removed it following an early morning of tender love making.
Upon entering the bedroom the detective could clearly smell the scent that was distinctly Alex as well as see the unfinished novel that she had started to read left upon the floor. It was as she moved towards their bed that she saw the light on the answering machine blinking. Pressing the button she heard the calming voice of her wife filter into the room
‘Hi sweetheart, about to head into court but wanted to let you know that I’m likely going to be late coming home. Will explain everything when I see you tonight but I just didn’t want you to worry, I know what your like. Sit back and relax. See you soon, I love you.’
Upon hearing Alex’s voice Olivia was soon overcome with grief, the events of the past couple of hours hitting her full force. She took hold of the picture frame that was sitting next to the phone, the photo was of herself and the woman who had been her friend, her lover, her partner, her wife and ultimately if you were to believe in it, her soul mate. It had been taken on their wedding day, shoulder to shoulder and hand in hand they had sat together and posed happily at the camera.
Staring at the photo, the pain and sadness of her loss soon engulfed her. She threw the frame across the room watching it shatter into pieces before stumbling back against the wall and slowly sinking to the floor. She could deal with the fact that her mother had been an alcoholic; she could even deal with endless cycle of rapists and child molesters and the other trial and tribulations that came along with being a detective with SVU. What she couldn’t handle was knowing that she would no longer be woken up with Alex’s soft lips caressing the back of neck. She could no longer send flowers to the attorney’s office on the spur of a moment, just to show her that she was in Olivia’s thoughts and that she was loved. And what hurt the most was the thought that she would no longer walk into the apartment after a days work to find her wife curled up on the couch waiting for her. Alone once more, she now had no one to come home to at night.
