Yesterday I decided that I needed to finished some of the games I had, to make room for next week, when I go back to work. ugh. *shudder*
Today I finished F.E.A.R, scariest game I have ever played. The ending was pretty good for a shooting/thriller game. I could not play this game wearing headphones, because it was so scary. The 2nd scariest game I have played is Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and that was very scary on headphones. I even jumped at some stages of that game. F.E.A.R is more of a psychological thriller, which is about the life story of this telepathic girl, who remains a mystery throughout the game, and still at the end. This game is so scary, that I could not play it at night. The game is unique, because it has a number of features rolled into one, but they do not feel like cliches. Some appear gimmicky at the start, but towards the end of the game they are a requirement. There are things like bullet time, where u can slow everything down, to help you out of difficult situations. It comes in handy, when battling against monsters that have enormous weapons.
I must admit, that the weapons were great in this game. balanced, and each had its own speciality. There were some creative weapons as well, and ones influenced/stolen from other games.
My favourites, were the repeating cannon, this laser weapon, or this machine gun which had a scope. The repeating cannon was like a heavy shotgun, that would knock a guy of his feet head on, or mince them if u got them from the side. This game is gory, so it would leave a lot of mess and splattered bits. The colours and shape of the weapon reflected its solidness, which is often quite hard to do in a game.
The laser one was probably my absolute favourite, it had a scope as well, and when u zapped ppl with it, a purple laser bolt would shoot all the way to the target, and do this cool lense distortion effect when it hit them, then they would fry and turn into a charred black skeleton. such a cool effect in game. especially in slow motion.
The machine gun with a scope fires in a burst of 3 shots. The cool thing about this weapon is its penetration power. I had things going in slow motion, and shot this dudes head of cleanly at the neck. it was pretty gruesome, but his head flew off, rebounded off the wall, rolled down the stairs, and parked itself some metres from his body. Unfortunately for him, a grenade went off just beside him, and blew his leg off, from the knee down. Because of the ragdoll physics, u get all kinds of weird angles happening, and bodies dont always slump how u expect them to. His leg landed with the knee bit on the floor, and the shoe (still on his foot) facing up in the air. it proceeded to hop about, which was quite funny at the time. but a bit disgusting to explain here. The scope on this machinegun distorts around the edges, just how u would expect with a real scope. so overall, im very impressed with the game.
The last few levels are very disturbing, there is this bit where the telepathic girl is reaching out to attack u. (this doesnt sound that scary, but she looks like the girl out of The Ring, and whenever u see her the world around ur is all blurry, and u cant see things properly. its like being underwater with ur eyes open. When she lunges at u, there is a contrast from the soft whispery noises into this horrible baby screaming noise, that sounds like a horrific torture scene with that violin strings noise they do in horror movies.
When you see the girl, you suddenly lose all your weapons, except for a measily pistol, and so im like firing and firing, and all the hairs on my arms are literally on end, and then im cornered in, and she finally goes away moments before she gets me.
At the last minute it all disappears, and your left standing in a different corridor, and its all normal again. very creepy.
In the last levels of the game, ur escaping from this facility, with a nuclear reactor in it, that u just destabilised. U rush out the door, and there is a huge mushroom cloud, and bits of debri are being ripped off and flung into the sky in a cloud of dust and decay, and there is an ever increasing wind that eventually pushes you sideways beyond ur control, and u stack up against this wall. Then in the final scene you are being flown away in a helicopter, and they are talking about how its all over, but the investigation has not begun yet. Your thinking great its finally over, and then there is a zzZZt noise, and the lights go off in the heli, and the female pilot is like "what was that" and the telepathic girl puts her arm & head up on the ledge of the helicopter where u get in. It's so freaky, but hopefully they wont make the mistake of making a sequel.
Glad that its finally over :)
