Year End Review 2009!

Dec 26, 2009 23:37

Ok, so I haven't written on this thing in a loooooong time, but I simply cannot let the year go by without filling this out again! So without further adieu, here comes the Year End Review!!

where were you when it began: Once again, I returned to Josh and Charlene's place, after being absent the year before. We had a great party with lots of video games (I enjoyed singing Learn To Fly by the Foo Fighters on Rock Band with Dave and Rob), cute little Madalyn (Josh and Charlene's baby daughter) and lots of booze! (I had seven drinks and remained quite sober, actually).

what was your new year wish? To get a job in the library field!

did it happen? Was it a good year? YES! Just a few weeks into the new year, I was called in for an interview for a Community Librarian position at Edmonton Public Library. I had been through a similar interview in the fall and had not been successful that time around. But this time, I was! I was offered the permanent, part-time position (later became full-time) of Community Librarian at the Calder branch of Edmonton Public Library. So I had to say a sad good-bye to my friends at the GSA and moved on over to EPL. Where I remain today!
The rest of the year was quite good, yes.

best place you went to:  Jasper. At the start of the year, I hadn't been there at all, and this year I visited Jasper three times! The Alberta Library Conference held there in April was a blast, and my trip there with Kyle in August was one of the best trips I've ever been on. I also had an amazing experience driving on the Icefields Parkway in the summer when my family was visiting.

worst place you went to: I can't think of any place that was particularly bad.......Rocky Mountain House was a bit disappointing but certainly not a bad place...

new friends: The crew at EPL. My community librarian pals and my Calder library buddies were a great group of people to meet, indeed!

break ups:  No break-ups, thank goodness! Although I was very distraught at Steven Page's breakup from the Barenaked Ladies... :-(

crushes: Even though this movie came out last year, I rediscovered the guy from Across the Universe....he is quite cute! And I kind of fell in love with Gord Downie after his eclectic performance at The Hip concert I went to...

happiest moment: SO MANY! Watching the status of my family's flight as it landed in Edmonton and seeing them come through the gates. The whole Jasper trip with Kyle. When Laura saw the mountains for the first time. The many nights out and "in-jokes" with the Calder Library staff. Christmas dinner with Kathy this year. Seeing Sarah Mclachlan walk out onto the stage at Folk Fest. Seeing Tony and Cleo after a year-long absence. Yeah, it was a pretty awesome year for happy moments!

how was your birthday: Fun! I had a great night out at Hudson's with Kathy, Kyle, Heather and Warren, and the following night I partied it up with the girls from Calder at Original Joes and then the Karaoke bar!

best present: The Wii! Which I haven't even actually seen yet, heh. It's waiting for me in Edmonton. Also, my Star Trek DVD's from Kyle. And my computer was a nice present from myself!

best party: Heather's 80s party. All the nights out with Calder staff. (Not the Christmas party, though).

regrets of the year: Not waiting for a little while longer to book my flights to Vegas. And missing the Coldplay concert!

favourites of the year

book: So many good books. Working at the library again really gave me access to a lot of excellent reads! I read A LOT of teen fiction this year and my favourites were Elsewhere, City of Bones, Life As We Knew It, An Abundance of Katherines and Paper Towns. I also liked The Lost Symbol and Stuff White People Like.

movie: Harry Potter and the Half Blood Prince, even though it annoyed me in many ways. Star Trek was good too, but don't get me started on the alternate timeline....I also surprisingly enjoyed the new version of A Christmas Carol. It was scary, though! Oh, and how could I forget Up?

album: Another year of great music, and the library helped with that too! I enjoyed Young Galaxy's new album. I also enjoyed music by Jets Overhead, In-Flight Safety, Said The Whale, Mother Mother, Hey Rosetta and The Dears. And I have a secret weakness for Rihanna....

Worst Song Hands down? Anything by Kanye West, that idiot..........

Best YouTube videos (I added this category myself): I enjoyed the Vlogbrothers stuff, Kelly's "Shoes" video (even though it's been out for a while), Stuffonmyhead, MeanKitty and the hilarious Star Trek "recuts" by GeneralGrin.

Best month: August, when Kyle and I went to Jasper, and my family visited.

Best Concerts (again, I added this category): Our Lady Peace at Capital Ex was the surprising best concert of the year for me. They put on one hell of an outdoor show! I also enjoyed The Dears at Starlite, Sarah Mclachlan and Tracy Chapman at the Folk Fest (that one would have been better if I hadn't been sitting so far away), The Tragically Hip (Gord Downie is a GOD) and Hey Rosetta with Dan Mangan.

lessons you've learned from 2009:

1. Good things come to those who wait
2. The longer I stay in Alberta, the harder it is to keep in touch with everyone in Ontario. :-(
3. All library systems have their drama!!
4. It's hard to be a public transit rider in Edmonton when you're not a student anymore

Event that changed your life: Getting the job at Edmonton Public Library! I met a great new group of people and get to do so many incredible things!

People that changed your life:

Kyle: I have to include him, once again. Our adventures will continue in the new year, when we move in together...

All of the Edmonton Public Library people have had a very positive impact on my life, as well!

Luna's new vet - She convinced me to start feeding Luna a bit of canned food every day! Heh heh. Which has been heaven for Luna, of course.

How did you change? Oh, I probably changed a lot. I like to think I became more assertive, in terms of work stuff. I also think I became more flexible and outgoing.

New Years resolution: Make more slideshows. Continue to make meal plans every week. KEEP IN TOUCH WITH PEOPLE! But only if they put in the same effort!

Phrases: ""Oops!" (Kyle's favourite saying)
"Why, Nadine, why?"
"Oh-em-gee!" (OMG)
"It cracks me up"
"Not in my hood!"

Song Lyric:
"Heading for Nowhere" by Jets Overhead:

I'm looking for something that I didn't notice was gone
Weeks, maybe months just went by without anything wrong
Now I'm aware I can't stop the repeating alarm
Here in this place I get peace, I get war, I get on

Standing at the station
Falling out of line
Missing my connection
Asking for the time

End at the beginning
Back onto the street
Always chasing something
Even in our sleep

(We got the time)
Heading for nowhere, heading for nowhere, heading for nowhere,

I'm ready for something I finally noticed was gone
Head to the place where I go when I know what went wrong
Moments repeat, colors change to the beat of a song
Counting the days I get by and the days I get on

End at the beginning
Back onto the street
Always chasing something
Even in our sleep

Heading for nowhere, heading for nowhere, heading for nowhere.

Standing at the station
Looking at the map
Stopping for a moment
Just before the crash

Happy New Year in a few days! :-D
