THE COUNTRY IN THE NORTH OF SOUTH AMERICA THAT IS FAMOUS FOR COFFEE AND DRUG TRAFFICKING IS SPELLED "C-O-L-O-M-B-I-A. THERE ARE NO U'S IN THE WORD. ARGH.
This is one of my pet peeves. Columbia, with a U, tends to be for things named after Christopher Columbus in English-speaking countries. Colombia, with an O, is a country. Seriously, it all makes sense if you say it in Spanish, the major language of the country. Colombia sounds normal, whereas Columbia sounds strange.
It's bad enough when laypeople screw it up on the internet, but now
Yahoo! News can't even get it right.
