The Reason I No Longer Watch Fox News

Dec 21, 2011 19:34

People go on about why we should "boycott" Fox News because of their being owned in part by the Saudis and other groups. To be honest, the ownership of Fox doesn't matter, so long as they provide balanced and accurate news reporting. Sadly, this has not been the case.

A couple of examples that come to mind is the accidental placement of (D) after the names of Republican politicians who are caught doing something wrong, or the more recent problem with an unemployment graph that failed to show the drop in unemployment in the U.S.

It's obvious that these problems are the result of ineffectual and inept editing, resulting in multiple errors sneaking into their news reporting.

Now, I know if I had the number of errors get through my work that the Fox News Editorial Staff has allowed, I'd be fired. Further, I'd have difficulties working in the editing or abstracting field in the future. So there is an apparent level of collusion between Fox News Editors and the Management.

Cronyism is a problem in any workplace, but by allowing such close ties between editors and management that frequent errors are not punished, it breeds an unethical environment. Reporters and the like are encouraged to take short cuts and not take care in their work because they know the editors won't catch the errors that they're committing. So why bother?

Of course, there is a solution to this: Fox News needs to fire its entire editorial staff and replace it with new blood, fresh from college. They also need to weed out the less ethical managers that have allowed inept editors to remain in their jobs.

Until Fox News does this and regains a level of professionalism that I feel the journalistic field requires, I see no reason to read their news. So consider my boycott to be free market-driven. I want quality news, not sensationalism that is poorly edited and shoddily constructed.
