Time flies when... well, time just flies

Oct. 21st, 2004.
Two thousand FOUR.
That's the date on my previous journal entry (right down there, see it?). Maybe I should have held out a little longer, going for two full years.

No, this is not an attempt to catch up. Forget it, it ain't gonna happen.

The last week has been interesting, though.

Had a brief visit with bakazaru (who has the ill fortune to be my son, but his loss is my gain), just passing through on his way to Japan with something like 165 pounds of stuff, since he will be there a while longer this time than last, assuming his employer (!) works out the visa thing. We had a brief visit with the marmots at the top of Mt. Evans, all of whom (which?) appeared to be untoasted. Not much time for much of anything else, unfortunately, but that's what you get when you and your kids live in different states, or for that matter when your kids go and grow up and get jobs and lives.

No sooner got him back to the airport than Martha and I took off for parts west -- by car, not plane, and not nearly as far west as Japan -- since it's the height of peach season in western Colorado. We've just gotten back, with melons, tomatoes, peaches, and several jars of peach-derived things (and some Vidalia onion picante) from Palisade, and apples and pears from Cedaredge. Martha's sleeping off the drive (and last week's ordeal at Sun), and I'm in LJ (notice?). Digression 1: in LJ mostly to verify that bakazaru actually got to Japan okay -- it appears he did indeed -- and while I'm here I did a little reading of some of you others, but no, I'm not going to try to read two years' worth (or even two weeks' worth, not just now anyway). Digression 2: okay, I left him at the airport Thursday morning and left for peaches Friday evening, I did go to work in between, getting there just in time for a going-away offsite "staff meeting" (read "beer-and-pizza") in honor of my intern's last day -- damn, I am really gonna miss him -- and also managing to get a new cut of code built for our favorite (read "only") OEM.

eleccham -- if you see this -- humblest apologies for not talking to you before I left, I really shoulda brought you some peaches for your mystical alchemical transformations. Maybe next year. Besides, you're busy with cherries.

Why go 200 miles for tomatoes? Didn't, we went 200 miles for peaches, and they're worth it. But my two sad little Earthbox-bound tomato plants have succumbed to, well, something. Maybe next year.

Other'n that, 'bout all the news (since I'm not going back more than a week) is finishing the Brin installment of the so-called "Second Foundation Trilogy", thereby finishing the series, and finally getting around to listening to the Big Head Todd CD I bought, um, last year. Yes, I'm a little behind.

The Sudoku project is pretty well bogged down, but that's mostly because now I'm using it as an excuse to get familiar with the new features in the Java SE 1.5.0. Yes, as I believe I mentioned, I'm a little behind. Now, can anybody explain to me why I can't use an enum in a static import? I gotta be missing something...
