Who I was is no longer what the world needs
But who I am is exactly what the world needs

Anubis was once the Lord of the Dead, but the world changed and needed something else from him. It needed another Lord of the Dead (Osiris) and needed him to be his son. So Anubis willingly (and without any struggle) died and was reborn into what was needed.
