All Hallows Eve
7:15 p.m.
I’m all alone in the house. For the first time, both Tristan and Honor are off trick-or-treating with friends. Occasionally a little band comes to my door -- most noteworthy a stout bride in a white polar fleece jacket -- and I hand out the mini chocolate bars. Toby’s not home from work yet. I’m having a little quite time and a gin.
Tristan reckons this is his last time trick-or-treating. Funny how you look forward to the time when they won’t demand so much of you and then it comes, bringing a little gust of sadness. I wouldn’t want it another way -- gad, think of all those parents with children who *won’t* grow up -- but like everything else in life, you get something and you lose something.
October is my favorite month, with Halloween, our anniversary, Toby’s birthday, the turning leaves. It makes me aware of all the things I’m glad of -- a happy family, a strong friendship with my husband, the ties that connect us with family and friends and of course, “Fun Size” Milky Way and Three Musketeers bars.
Life is good.
