i dont ever see people having maids to clean up their houses here in the US, granted that I don't hang out with wealthy people or live in an upscale area. employing maids is actually common in Indonesia, usually if you own a house and live in a big city, the more likely you employ maids. yes, the still a third world country Indonesia is big on employing maids. growing up my grandparents employed some maids. they live in the house and help my grandparents with cleaning, cooking, more cleaning and sometimes accompanying me. now that my grandparents are older and spend more time in the house than at work or traveling, they employ only one maid, Mbak Siti. She's been with us for years now and she is the sweetest and most patient of all.
now that i've lived in the US for a while now, the idea of employing maids seem so unnecessary. both my parents work full time and when they come back from work, they work some more for my younger brother… driving him to after school activities and what not, but they manage to do the household chores and keep the house almost spotless. i know many other households with three times more chaotic schedule than ours and they don't have maids either.
but TODAY, here in my apartment building, i saw a maid lady cleaning up one's studio. the door was open and i just happened to be passing by. i thought how much of a mess can you make in a studio apartment and how busy (or lazy!) can you be to not be able to clean up your own studio.
for about 3 weeks now we've been working out of my studio as we are waiting for our permanent place to be ready. we here are 3 guys and me. it gets messy sometimes… papers, samples, pens, etc. but heck i can still take care of it myself. i get help from david too but i dont see the need of a maid anytime soon.
all this maid talking only makes me want to watch The Jeffersons. the first episode when they just moved in to the apartment (in the East siiide…) and Louise is objecting the idea of having a maid and it turns out one of her old friends is working for the apartment above hers. Her friend thinks she's a maid too and laughs in disbelief when she's told that Louise actually lives there. Hmm…
