Sharpe's Peril

On his way back to England, Sharpe and Harper are tasked with escorting a young lady to her fiancé. They join a group of travellers heading in the same direction; unfortunately, not everyone is as interested in reaching their destination as they are.

We learn that Hakeswill had a son; Sharpe's reaction is to attempt to kill him. Do you think that this is justified? Do you think Sharpe could have justified it?
Did you think this was a fitting end to Gen. Simmerson's story?
Was it really necessary to have Sharpe and Harper escorting Marie, or do you think the story would have been just as effective if they had been asked to escort the baggage train?

Feel free to talk about anything you like - the questions are only there as a guide if you get stuck. Please keep book discussion to the book post, though you're welcome to discuss changes and make comparisons.
