The couple across the street is fighting again. Screaming fighting. I could hear them from my balcony, yelling and slamming doors. They've started a chain reaction of dog barks down the street. He keeps yelling for her to shut up and let him have the last word for once, but she just keeps on yelling back at him.
Do most couples fight like that? I've never heard my parents seriously fight. Wait, that's a lie. I've heard them fight once, over something ridiculous involving the cupboard where my mom keeps tupperware that falls out every time anyone opens the door. They yelled at each other for maybe five minutes, then my dad took a few tupperware containers out of the cupboard and threw them into the backyard. My mom started to yell about what the neighbors must think, then they both cracked up. My dad took a hand towel out of a drawer and started rolling it up and doing that locker-room-ass-slap thing to her with it, and that was pretty much the end of the fight. My parents are strange like that. You know, they rarely show actual normal signs of affection towards each other. They appear to be more like best friends than lovers. I think they still really are in love, though. When my brother was still all fucked up from drugs and shit, he used to say the meanest things to my mom, and my dad would get really pissed and stop him and make him apologize. "You don't talk to your mother like that" was a common thing for my dad to say when we were growing up. That's kind of sweet.
I hope I fall in love someday, and I hope we're still in love after thirty years. I never want to have frequent screaming fights like the couple across the street.
