to make myself clear

An entry by susanweise made me write this entry - well more or less. It's about Nighwish becomming more and more famous, selling more and more records and becomming what people call "mainstream". Some "fans" don't like this because... hm... not easy to say why they don't like it. To me it's always they want to be someone special knowing a band most of the others don't know, I see no sense in there... Well to come back to me. I want to use this to say why I listen to Nightwish.

I am often asked why I listen to Nightwish but not band XY and why I don't look like a "metaller" or "gothic" or whatever. To all of you who don't know how I look like have a look at my friends only banner... Yes it's me... pretty normal, ordinary, nothing special... not conspicuous or anything.

Honestly (and the ones who know me for quite a while *looks to gerdimaus*) Nightwish don't make music I used to listen to... Yes I confess... I was a fan of Take That, East 17, Backstreet Boys, NSync... I won't listen to such music anymore but I did. I always listened to music considered as "mainstream" or typical "charts music". It changed because I get sick when I look at the charts, besides NIghtwish I listen to many "oldies" especially 80s and 70s, in addition to that Robbie Williams, Pink and things like that. But actually nothing that is rather similiar to Nightwish music.
So why Nightwish then. My ex-boyfriend gave me their music somewhere in 2001 and again in 2002 when "Century Child" came out. I listened to some of it but couldn't find a real relation. I had some songs in my playlist but I really didn't care who they were, where they came from and things like that. With my new boyfriend I listened a lot more because he is really into that music as he is with Rhapsody, Therion, Blind Guardian and so on (although he doesn't really make this impression too)
They real "boom" came with "Nemo" yes with "Nemo" - call me "nemo kiddie" (probably rather German expression but very common when you look through the German Nightwish board at the official forum), I don't care. But it wasn't the music in first place that got my attention but the lyrics. I had some lines of it in my last layout of my livejournal. I could identify with the lyrics, I felt somewhat like it... like "nemo" (nobody), don't know what to do, where belong to and things like that. So I took the other songs and tried to understand (honestly I failed in the first place because I often couldn't get the lyrics, I just didn't understand acoustically) their lyrics and after visiting the band's offical page I was so impressed and especially the "Century Child" lyrics really mean a lot to me (Tuomas must have had a real bad time while writing). Although "Century Child" is often regarded as the worst Nighwish album for the hardcore fans because the music is so soft, it's my favourite album. "Ocean Soul" makes me cry and it is my favourite song but I hardly can listen to it because it makes me cry.
When people ask me how I feel I just like to give them the "Century Child" album especially "Ocean Soul" and say "listen to this and you know how I feel".
Well what I wanted to say, it's not necessarily the music but the lyrics that make me listen to Nightwish. They mean so much to me, it might sound strange to you but it is like that. I can identify with them (well not all because in some songs I really don't know what Tuomas wants to tell me).

I think it became quite obvious that especially Tuomas caught my attention which doesn't mean that I don't care about the other members. Nightwish are 5 people, Tuomas alone couldn't make it as well as Tarja couldn't make it by herself. All of them do their best and I think they like what they do and I am very grateful for what they do. Tuomas got my attention, yes, but he wrote the music and the lyrics, that I can identify with. Sometimes I'd like to talk about it with him (really strange isn't it) or about whatever... well alright now you don't have to follow me anymore... might sound too stupid.

To sum up... I am not a Nighwish fan because they gained success and it is "cool" to listen to them. I love their lyrics, I don't like every song, but the music gives me a lot and that's it and I really don't care if they are number 1 or if they are number 100 in the charts. I don't care if they have lots of merchandising - I have some of it too, because I like to show what music I listen to, but does that make a bad fan out of me or a good one or no fan or what?
