Today's horoscope:
"This is a good time to make decisions that will bring together your need for practicality as well as your desire for emotional freedom, Audrey. Keep in mind that it is important for your mental health to be able to have real faith in your fantasies and your ability to see them through to fruition. There is a special portal open for you today that has your name on it."
Now I just need to find the damn thing and escape into a world where I hopefully belong. Wouldn't that be nice?
I came to my Tuesday/Thursday anthro class for the first time in like a month today so I could get the info on our written final and found the classroom empty. Typical. This is my only class today, which is partly why I never came. Why bother with the long, cold walk only to sit through a lecture I'm not going to pay attention to anyway and then turn around and leave again. Bugger.
Being on campus today has, however, allowed me to proceed with an unusual experiment. I sometimes wonder if I wasn't perhaps born in the wrong century. Surely I am meant for a much more interesting time period. The Middle Ages, for example. So today, as I watched all the people, I tried to imagine what role they would fulfill if campus were instead a medieval town. I sorted people into shopkeepers, scholars, peasants, soldiers, middle- and upperclass sons and daughters who don't really work, mercenaries, merchants, lone swordsmen, and so on and so forth. It was quite fun.
I realized that I was playing heavily on stereotypes while I did it. I judged based on appearance (physical build as well as clothing types and styles), the way they walked (if they skulked or were confidant, etc.), whether or not they looked me in the eye and how they looked me in the eye, etc. I did all of it in a glance. I based a lot of it on their faces. I derived a personality that suited me from that. And even though I know that you can't tell what a person is capable of just by looking at them, I can't help but wondering how accurate my guesses were. Because I know that we're all raised with stereotypes and they affect the way we act, even if we don't realize it. We come even to expect certain things from ourselves based on our background and appearance. Isn't that funny?
Death Cab for Cutie's new album "Plans" is really freaking good. Especially the song "When Soul Meets Body."
Oh, yeah. It's fucking freezing. Ta.
