James was endeavoring to marry a woman he loved, though she did not share his feelings. The memories of Elizabeth will still play in his mind sometimes and can create biased decisions in anything regarding pirates and blacksmiths, making it all the more frustrating when he finds himself in this situation with no power or influence.

He was a sailor in the British Royal Navy, a job he was quite fond of. Despite this no longer being his career, he will often find himself filling the role of a militaristic man in his new place. Given the opportunity, James still enjoys exploring in an attempt to chart new land and may sometimes work as a leader.

Personality:
James is a very sincere, honest, honorable, and loyal man. He holds great pride and strength in the relationships of all kinds that he keeps. A very educated and well bred individual, he has been raised with above average intelligence, a great ability to reason and solve problems, and an instinctual sense of tact, manners, and chivalry. He is a level-headed person with tender compassion. A great family man. Although he can sometimes dwell on his failures, James does his best to look instead to the potential idealistic situation that can be created and strive toward it. Organized, generally concise, and considerate to those who may be less educated, the man is an overall charming and kind man.

That said, James is dedicated to a fault. He is secure in his set of beliefs, values, and morals, but has been known to act against these beliefs on occasion for the sole reason of pursuing his cause. A deep-seeded need to endure and pressure to succeed force him to always try to work harder toward goals that may not even be right for him; he is, in essence, a perfectionist who demands that others should be as righteous as himself. He is often viewed as distant because of his being stoic and often caught within his own thoughts. Though his eternal pursuit of justice is considered by himself to be a strength, others may consider it a weakness because he can be biased; always believing that people-including criminals-cannot change and will be dedicated to their paths as much as he is.

James is a very trusting person of women and men of class, prejudice against those without culture. He tends toward compassion in his general nature, deeply believing that those of education will be good and those of ill breeding who have chosen the life of a criminal will be bad. A rather personable man in general, he gets along well with others and is especially gracious and charming when meeting new people that fit these standards. He is well liked by most he knows and does his best to help keep their good wishes, sometimes spending too much finances and time on impractical desire to impress. If they are of his negative prejudice, however, then he can come across easily as cold and judgmental.

James would name himself a stoic and rather reserved individual, often preferring his own thoughts and opinions to those of the people around him. He attempts to make his own decisions and later present them to others, usually in a desperate attempt to compensate for the great influence of his parents. Dedicated to a fault and trying nearly as hard to please those close to him and his superiors, the man would be deemed a hopeless romantic to those that know him best and a good military man.

While James is a level-headed man with a warm heart and cool head the vast majority of the time, he can also be a fragile creature. Criticism is often taken to heart, pushing him to excel or work harder toward whatever project he has dedicated himself to at the time. Severe emotion can cause him to “break”-a rare testament to his insecure nature-which can force him into intense anger which causes rage, jealousy, and bitter resentment sometimes resulting in cruelty or persecution; again, this is rare and very few know of this condition.

Some military background and a general passion for efficiency causes a tendency toward order and routine. He focuses on details and facts, sometimes forgetting the larger picture, though in the end he will nearly always trust instinct over logic. James places great emphasis on carrying through with his word and commitment in general. He is careful, deliberate, and precise. He acts with caution and hates spontaneity when it accompanies potential dangers.

James is a nearly ideal family man. He does his best to support and encourage his significant other in every aspect of her life-which can sometimes be considered smothering, though he attempts moderation. Children adore him and he, in turn, knows how to talk to them, teach them, and to help them grow.

Non-Supernatural/Non-Superhuman Skills: James is an almost expert swordsman (in the commentary, he was listed as equal to Barbossa and only surpassed by Will). He is also a good shot with a pistol and has some basic survival skills such as starting a fire and scrounging for food/hunting.
Supernatural/Superhuman Powers: None
Power Limitations: N/A

First-Person Writing Sample:
I wonder if someone might be able to explain to me how it is that the creatures of this dream are able to inflict any sort of wounds upon me. I have seen things beyond explanation or imagination and still I marvel at the manner of beasts that reside upon these grounds. Perhaps it is good that I have been stripped of my weapons, else I might be giving a number of the creatures what I feel they deserve; a quick shot and the heart's stop. It seems that they have gone so far as to intrude upon the members of this residence. I cannot help but speculate that they are related to our being trapped within these walls and that their defeat may be the chance for my return and the restoration of my honour. I see it as the promise of redemption. If I am to succeed, I must be prepared.

I expect that I will be unable to obtain victory without the aid of some other of the crew members here. If that is the case, so be it. Who among you is willing to help me in ridding the grounds and home of these beasts in an effort to return home? Or are you all still content to idle away in your rooms and to simply explore?

Third-Person Writing Sample:
James smoothed his coat and nodded at his desk, as though that were granting some indication of his appearance. When he was content, he turned and took the few steps to his door. It took him only a moment's time to exit his room, where he clicked his heels together and pivoted to face the door. There was a precision to his movements, especially as he locked his door behind him and settled the key into one of the pouches at his waist. Glancing about, he strode toward the stairs, both hands clasped professionally behind his back. His appearance, despite the lack of a mirror in his cabin, was crisp and refined and he took great pride in his uniform, despite the efforts it required.

While his intention had been to descend the stairs and continue to explore the grounds, he paused in his planned destination as he caught sight of movement in the library. His hand naturally went to his side and he was dismayed to recall that his sword had been taken away from him upon his arrival here from whatever madman had brought him from his own life. Though he was confident that no man could hurt him in this dream state, he was still dismayed at the idea of being wounded as he had already confirmed that some level of pain translated to this surreal place. After a moment's consideration, curiosity got the better of him and he moved slowly toward the library's entrance, hands at his side. If he were forced to enter a physical quarrel, he was not entirely unprepared.

“Identity yourself, lest I be forced to take aggressive action.” He paused in the doorway, listening. He heard a noise to his right and glanced that way, but found no reply. Then another noise fell partially behind him, to his left, and he turned again. Offering the empty room a stern expression, as if it might feel his disappointment and change its ways, he turned away dismissively and continued toward the stairs. This place was littered with creatures that were the material of wives' tales and he did not want to provoke them, should they truly exist. To comfort himself, he muttered a quiet, “I shall not fall victim to your endeavors to subdue my confidence, whatever you are.”
