Hey everybody!!!!

So I'm Finally emailing you to give you all an idea of what's going on.
Here's the gist:

On Sunday we had our engineering induction, which was a bit strange to say the least. We went on a planned tour thing through some of the engineering buildings and learned what important qualities we needed in order to be a Wash U engineer.

A Wash U Engineer:

1. Ask Why Not as much as why

At this station, we were instructed to ask why not as much as why. One of the Encouncil members pulled out an old 486 PC and placed it on the concrete ground in front of a group of us. Then, he pulled out an axe and asked "Do you think I should do this?" So he basically smashed it to bits... that was entertaining.

2. Is a collegue to all

Here, we were each given a LEGO piece and instructed to add to a tower creation thing. Then they told us some heartwarming lesson about how we couldn't have built it without what was already started or all of the other pieces provided by the other people in our group. That was all.

Between stations 2 and 3 we went down the creepy old fashioned freight elevator. It was creepy.

3. Acts in an ethical manner

This was boring. They told us a story about the bridge that collapsed because an engineer wanted it to look pretty. Supposedly it was innovative, in that it led to the invention of the modern day suspension bridge. Then again, a dog died when it collapsed. Some trade-off.

4. Has an open mind

They fed us a whack story about the ghost of somebody haunting Lopata Gallery and then got mad at us if we didn't have an open mind about it. Another kind of stupid station...

5. Finds fun in their lives and their work

Here we were each given a piece of paper and a bunch of push pins. There was a wall with balloons. We were given 2 minutes to make something out of the paper and pins to pop a balloon from behind a line 15 feet away. People made paper airplanes that didn't work. Supposedly this was fun :-P

6. Has a role in society

We played a clapping game where we were supposed to clap at the same time as the person next to us without any verbal communication. I forget how this was relevant to having a role in society. Actually, if I remember correctly, it didn't connect at all, but it was moderately fun to see how awful people were at clapping at the same time.

7. Focuses on the future (using the past as their guide)

Here we were all blindfolded. Then, they made us into a train by putting our hands on the shoulders of the person in front of us. We then followed the leader all the way to the end where we sat in this spooky chem room and got our hard hats. It looked like a cult initiation thing with candles everywhere and the spooky leader and everything. But we got hard hats!!

That was about it. Now for my schedule:

Class - Time Day Credits

Calc III - 9:00-10:00 MT RF (4)
Comp Sci I - 10:00-11:00 MT RF (4)
Comp Sci I Lab - 4:00-5:30 W (0)
Statics (ME I) - 7:00-8:30 M W (3)
ME Design - 6:00-9:00 T (2)
Frosh Sem EN120 - 2:15-3:45 W (1)

Total - 18 hr/wk (14)

Everyone's envious of my not having to take physics or chemistry. Those labs apparently filled up everyone elses schedule. Here I have Thursdays and Fridays off after lunch and Wednesdays to sleep in. I could've had the calc class later but this was too beautiful to pass up. I also got good profs in the late classes (the only real reason I'm taking late
classes). I suppose the other reason I'm taking late classes is that the afternoons are nice here to do things. I like my schedule and CLASSES START TOMORROW!!! (except EN120, which starts next week)

Last but not least, I feel I should inform you that I did my first load of wash today (colors, underwear, etc.) without any hitches. I dunno why I ever thought it'd be difficult - you just look at the tags and follow the instructions...

There are chess players here. Not just that, but some of them are actually female... And they're hot. In fact, about 50% of the women here are hot. I'm not talking about home in NoVA hot, I'm talking about smoking almost pornstarish hot. The hot ones are even nice. It's amazing. Ask about the women I'm meeting, they're all really cool.

Hope you guys are enjoying life as much as I'm enjoying life here.

Lotsa Love,
Raber
