So after a discussion with someone wanting a level head when it comes to haunts and boojums and things that go bump in the night...and yeah, they came to me anyhow, I've formulated a theory, after a fashion.
See, masks are important, when you're dealing with ghosts and spirits and the like. . They're easily confused, so to them, sometimes the symbol of the thing is as important as the real thing. You can fool a spirit by carryin', say, something symbolically important to someone -else- particularly if it's associated with their birth or death, like their deathmask or their bones, or hell, the bronzed footprints from when they were just born.
So what happens when you gather up a bunch of folks with coincidentally familiar names in a location that already has a rep of bein' haunted? You get a -lot- of confused spooks, looking at the label instead of the thing wearin' it.
And as I have mentioned before, there's something of a small cottage industry in folks who dine on ghosts. So you throw that tasty sort of bait out there, and once you lure enough fish in, you harvest your crop.
The question then becomes who's doin' the harvesting.
