Room 324 [Tuesday Late Morning]

Nov 15, 2011 09:37

He almost hadn't even bothered coming back. Not just because he'd spent nearly two hours wrangling with the Portalocity booking agents regarding getting a portal to Fandom in the first place; they'd finally, finally relented when Warren flung an absurd amount of money in their direction. The real reason had much more to do with the fact that time ( Read more... )

What the hell, Bobby. What the hell, Tony. What the hell was up with everyone this week? Warren had been halfway through breakfast at the Perk when he'd realized that he'd gotten a voicemail message, and he'd come back flying, taking the stairs two at a time on his way down to their room.

"Leaving? Please tell me you're joking, Bobby?"

Something about the state of the room at the moment pretty much confirmed that Bobby... wasn't joking.

"What's going on?"

"What's going on?" Bobby echoed, shoving a bunch of clothes into a duffel bag with a ferocity they probably didn't deserve. "They tried to kill my father, Warren. That's what's going on."

Oh.

Warren winced, stepping into the room and closing the door carefully behind himself.

"They? The ones who had, um..." He waved vaguely in the direction of the screen that they'd watched that bigoted presidential campaign speech on. While he'd been vaguely aware that Bobby had been off doing something about it, he hadn't realized that it had gotten that messy. "God, Bobby, I'm sorry. How is he?"

"He'll be lucky," Bobby swallowed hard, trying to force back the tears that threatened to well up, "if he makes it through the night."

Shit. Shit shit shit shit shit. Warren drew in a breath that was a bit ragged, himself. Okay. Bobby's dad, so... so he was probably with the X-Men or something, and they had top of the line facilities, and maybe even a healer on staff. That other Warren or something. Right? That was how it worked, maybe? So it was bad. It was really bad.

"Is there anything I can do?"

He still had to ask. Couldn't just let it drop with an 'oh, and now Bobby is leaving forever, sorry about your dad, bye!'

"Let people know why I left?" Bobby asked. On some level, he knew just up and leaving like this was a bad idea... but at the same time, he wasn't sure he could keep it together for a bunch of phone calls.

"I can do that," Warren agreed, nodding a little. "Teachers and stuff? Sookie? Tony?"

He was going to do whatever he could to help, here. Even if he wanted to cling to Bobby's arm and not let him go. Even if he wanted to demand to come along too, even knowing that Bobby wasn't going to be coming back, that he probably wouldn't be, either, if he joined him. Tagging along wasn't in the cards, and he knew it, as much as he hated it. "Anyone else I missed?"

Bobby nodded. "Karla." Although he expected that one might be something of a given. "Raven and Angelica too. Kennedy, if you can get a message through..." he didn't have high hopes for that one, based on a previous lack-of-success with messages going through that he was now assuming was Portalocity's fault.

Portalocity was doing a whole lot of no good these days.

"Karla, Raven, Angelica, Kennedy," he repeated quietly, making a mental note. Where had Kennedy vanished to, these days? Considering the difficulties booking portals and the like, it really had to be a Portalocity thing.

Believing that led to so much less worry.

"You know I'm going to tell you to keep in touch, right? I mean, that's kind of just a given?"

It had better be, Robert Louis Drake. Oh, it had better.

"Yeah," Bobby nodded. "I will. Once things- settle down." A few comics, textbooks for the accounting coursework his dad had insisted on...

"I don't get it," he said, placing the textbook in the box. "I mean, his whole life, he carries on like he... I don't know, like he hates me. But then- they tried to beat him into turning me in. Into giving them something on me. But he didn't. Why would he do that, War?"

"Because you're his son," Warren replied, softly. "I mean... my dad pretty much kept me strapped in and hidden away since the day I manifested. But it's because he thought he was doing what was best for me. They might really suck at parenting, but that doesn't change the fact that they care, I don't think."

Fathers were... kind of weird that way. If Warren ever did end up being one, if he was anything like his own dad, he'd expect someone to smack him with a clue-bat. Repeatedly.

"What we are... it might just be too big for them. But that doesn't change the fact that you're still that kid that he watched grow up."

Bobby laughed, a little, at that, but it wasn't a particularly happy laugh. "He and I haven't had a single conversation since- since the day my powers manifested, that didn't end in an argument. Heck, most of them began as arguments. But when I needed him, he came through."

"He did," Warren agreed, reaching out in a gesture that was entirely too similar to something his own father would do to rest a hand on Bobby's shoulder. "Look, Bobby, if there's anything else you need, anything at all, don't hesitate to let me know, okay? I don't care if there's a reality between us, I'll do whatever I can."

He'd storm into Portalocity's main office and start kicking things, if he had to. Not that it would change anything, but hey, the sentiment was there.

"I know, buddy," Bobby said, twisting so that he could grab Warren in a fierce hug. "You better believe I'll take you up on that if it comes to it."

Oh, you better believe that Warren was returning that hug. And if the thought crossed his mind that maybe if he just didn't let go, Bobby wouldn't have to leave... well... Could anyone blame him?

"Good. And you take care of yourself, okay?"

He knew that Bobby was more than capable of pulling through in a tough spot. But... it had to be said.

"I will," Bobby said, taking a deep breath. "It's funny, you know. I've spent so much time racing from one battle, one crisis after another, that the one challenge I never took time to face was finding something in common with my father. I just- feel like I owe it to him and my mom to be there." Finally, reluctantly pulling away, he added, "I've got to- my portal's gonna be here any second." One last shoulder-punch headed Warren's way for good measure. "Make sure Thor stays out of trouble, will ya?"
