BACKGROUND

Hometown: Bielefeld Estates, back then known as The Garden.
Type of childhood: Relatively peaceful and harmonious as a young Mazoku. He lived with his immediate (and sometimes extended family) on a self-sufficient estate. As a child, Rufus (or Ruffie) would often times make believe he was on a grand adventure with his faithful cat BonBon. It wasn’t until he reached his fifties that he was sent to the military because of the rising threat of Soushi.
First Memory: His mother singing.
Most Important Childhood Event that still affects him/her: First time meeting “Cousin” or the Shinou (Alarik).
Why? Before and after Crystal von Wincott, Shinou was the most important person in Rufus’ life. As a child, he was conditioned to believe, one day, he would serve his elder Cousin faithfully. Their first meeting sparked the beginning of Rufus’ ambitious studying of Maryoku.
Education: Born into an upper class family with all the luxury that went along with it, he received an education on the elementary skills of horse-back riding, sword-fighting, Maryoku, table manners, and all the traditions of his family.
Religion: The Mazoku do not really have a belief system. Rufus celebrates Midsummer and Midwinter, however that is as far as it goes.
Finances: Money isn’t really a worry for Rufus. When his father was alive, finances were handled by the Patriarch. As Rufus was the sole heir to the Bielefeld line, he inherited the lands, servants/serfs, and other monetary possessions.

FAMILY

Mother: Geneva von Bielefeld
Relationship with her: Geneva was the great woman behind Rufus’ father. As a mother, she was caring, but did not smother her son. From a young age, Rufus was taught to put Honor before his life, to Protect, and to put Duty above all else. Geneva believed that her brother’s son (Alarik) possessed great power and strength. To that end, she conditioned Rufus to be the perfect soldier; never question authority, do as your told, etc. As Rufus grew older, he left the Estate to follow the Shinou’s military campaign against Soushi and their relationship became distant. Rufus’ marriage brought him back to his family but mother and son had lost the connection and affection for each other. Rufus was too jaded and Geneva was too bitter.
Father: Wolfgang von Bielefeld
Relationship with him: Rufus was not particularly close with his father. The man was busy and had little time for his energetic and fiery son. However, Rufus respected his father deeply and strived to be Head of House. Near the end of Rufus’ life, Wolfgang attracted a rare disease and was left weak and invalid. The Riot took the majority of the Bielefeld line, including Rufus; however Wolfgang survived and sent Desmond (Rufus’ son) to live with a relative in Spitzberg.
Siblings: None

Extended Family: Alarik von Spitzberg (First-cousin from mother’s side).
Relationship with him: Complicated, in one word. Alarik (Shinou as he is known to be called) is at once Rufus’ kin and Lord. When young, Alarik was the kind of Mazoku Rufus strived to be: Strong, independent, honorable, and ruthless in battle. From childhood, Rufus knew one day he must somehow serve Alarik, as the von Spitzberg family held more sway in the political field than von Bielefeld. Geneva was very diligent in ensuring Rufus held Alarik in high-esteem.
During the Great War between Shinou and Soushi, Rufus’ devotion to his Commander and Cousin reached a new height. For decades the war dragged on, covering a vast expanse of land and leaving everyone emotionally and physically scarred. Rufus believed it was Alarik’s determination, strength and overall leadership that led them to victory.
Despite Rufus’s undying loyalty to Alarik and later on, Shin Makoku, one event eventually led to Rufus coming close to resenting his Cousin. His lover, Crystal von Wincott, was sent to Earth after the creation of the four Taboo Boxes. As the second son and youngest in the Wincott family, Crystal was the more expendable of the two brothers. Because of this, the Shinou ordered the brunette to take one of the Boxes to another world. For a while, Rufus wanted nothing than to hurt Alarik as much as his Cousin has hurt him. The once solid and affectionate relationship between the two blonds became cautious and formal. This issue was never resolved because Geneva requested Rufus to move back to Bielefeld in order to marry. When Rufus died, one of the things he regretted most was not making up with Alarik.
