Character's Name: Chase Young
Fandom: Xiaolin Showdown
Time Frame: Post-series
Age: Somewhere in the neighborhood of 1,500, but he looks around 19.
Background: (Some liberties have been taken with his background in order to flesh it out more fully, since the show didn’t provide too much significant history, but only in regards to his childhood and the space of time between going evil and his introduction to the series.)
Chase Young was born in a tiny village somewhere in China during the later half of the 5th century. From an early age he was energetic, strong, and had a keen interest in fighting, and had a Xiaolin monk not passed by his village when he was 8, he likely would have gone into the military. As it was, he left home with the monk and joined a temple of warriors whose sole intent was to uphold all that was Good in the world and suppress all that was Evil. He was quickly realized to be one of four Xiaolin Dragons - particularly powerful monks who had unrivaled abilities among their peers - and was set among two other boys, Dashi and Guan, who shared his fate. For some time they trained together and were all quick to rise through the ranks.
When they were in their late teens, a rumor came that a witch was on the rise from the West. Known as Wuya, she had studied the ways of evil magic - the Heylin - and was now coming to end the Xiaolin with all the power she had amassed. Together, the three were able to defeat her army and seal her away in a magical puzzle box, thus starting a short period of peace - but evil rarely sleeps. Not long after Wuya had been vanquished, another, more subtle evil rose, looking after the heroic monks with a plan to upset the balance.
Chase had never been the most pure-minded, though he tended to stridently deny such accusations, and so it was to him that this evil came. The demon Hannibal Roy Bean saw potential and power in the young monk alongside an intrigue for the darkness, though the latter was forced away almost to the point of ridiculousness. He began to try and tempt Chase, first with promises and then with threats and warnings, to turn to the Heylin. After wearing on him for some time, he made a definitive offer: he handed over the fabled Lao Mang Lon soup, made from the flesh of dragons and rumored to grant incredible power to whoever drank it. Hours of deliberation finally lead Chase to accept and drink the soup. The result was a rending of his soul and a transformation of his body. All that was good about him was ripped away, lost to time, and he was given both Heylin magical powers a new, infinitely more powerful form: that of a twisted, hideous dragon. Relishing in his newfound powers, he razed the Xiaolin temple and fought his closest friends. Hannibal attempted to rein in this new evil and twist it to his will, but Chase was quick to get rid of that little problem: he locked the demon away in the Yin-Yang world, a place where souls slept.
He fought with his friends multiple times over the course of the next few years, but after not winning any real battles, Chase fled to the west and made his home in the Tian Shan mountains. For the next 1,500 years he simply spent time exploring the world. He learned everything he could, fought Good whenever it reared its arrogant head, experienced majesties and tragedies, and began a collection. Always seeking a new challenge, he constantly battled warriors all over the world, and whoever he defeated he forced to swear loyalty to him. Then they would follow him back to China, transformed into a wildcat - typically a tiger or lion - to serve as his personal vanguard. He also sought out any information he could on the final destruction of the Xiaolin and with it, all the Good in the world.
He stumbled across a prophecy - or something of the sort, anyway. Eventually, the Xiaolin Dragons would fully reunite again, and one among them would prove to be either his greatest ally or the one who caused his downfall. Soon enough news came to him of Wuya's release from her puzzle box and the rise of various, more pathetic forms of evil fighting against the Xiaolin Dragons. And yes, just as predicted, there was a single one who he knew would either serve at his side or sign his death warrant - Omi, the Xiaolin Dragon-in-training of the Water.
After testing the monks repeatedly and continually harassing (or helping) them, he concerted an elaborate plan that would trick the young monk into working for him. By managing to pull away the good half of Omi's soul via a trinket invented by his once-friend Dashi, Chase got the boy to swear loyalty to him. Even when his plot was discovered and overturned, causing Omi to return to normal, the pledge still carried, and so now Omi served in the vanguard as a cat alongside so many others. This change also gave the boy's immense Xiaolin powers over to Chase, and with them, he brought to the world to its knees.
Yet evil, for all its power, never does seem to win. The other Xiaolin monks managed to rescind the pledge through a game, and Chase, honorable if only in that regard, upheld his word: Omi was returned to normal, regained his Xiaolin powers, and fixed the nearly-ruined world. Now Chase knew it was only a matter of time before the boy's strength grew to a level where even he wouldn't be able to stop it. Killing him, it seemed, was the only option left, but problems and fights continued to get in the way.
Eventually, Hannibal Roy Bean was freed from his eternal prison, setting more evil on the world than before - and another rival Chase would dearly have loved to kill. But before anything significant was done, Omi somehow managed to create a temporal rift in an attempt to gain a higher rank in the temple. He tried to go back in time and prevent Chase from ever having been turned to evil, and while he was successful, the resultant ripple in the timeline altered the world for the worse. Evil had the greater reign, as Hannibal had been forced to turn to Guan instead, and Chase served on the Xiaolin side. After a number of fights, the Xiaolin monks were captured, and Chase went ahead with his evil transformation anyway - in order to save them all. Omi did manage to fix the timeline and restore it to the proper order, but the memories and effects of it all lingered.
Personality: Narcissism, arrogance, brilliance, martial power, a warrior's code, a silver tongue, a love of power, and a lack of anything resembling morality: these are the key facets of Chase Young's personality.
By definition, he's an evil bastard. He's manipulative and sly, willing to do whatever it takes to get whatever it is that he wants. There are relatively few depths he will not sink to, though once he has sworn to do something as a warrior, he will not break that promise - even if trying to get him to that point is a sincere pain. He has no real moral standards though he's excellent at pretending he does should such become necessary. He's a smart bastard, too, not just in regards to intelligence but in nearly all other areas: socially, common sense, street smarts, survival skills ... you name it, he's got it. He enjoys the finer things in life and knows how to keep himself utterly under control (thanks mainly to his monastic background), though he does tend to slip sometimes, usually when he’s angry or convinced of his own victory. Chase is suave and charming most of the time, since those things tend to get him where he needs to go, though it's always served with an undercurrent of suspiciousness. Why be an outright demonic villain when people are stupid enough to believe otherwise?
He's got an amazing amount of pride in himself and his achievements, but continually strives for more. Whether it's more knowledge, more ownership, or more power over everything in existence, he wants it constantly. Other people are, at best, pawns to be used in his plans; after all, he's inherently superior, ageless and dominant. Why shouldn't they fall to his will? He wants to rule the world and conquer all its peoples, to force them into subservience under him. Victory is key to him. Smaller losses are acceptable only when they further a greater cause. He plans ahead, illustrating elaborate and intricate plots that he intends people to have no choice but to follow along with. In the end, no matter how many victories the good guys manage, he always somehow comes out on top - or at least, that's how it's supposed to go. He is relentless and determined to get where or what he wants: nothing will stop him.
Chase isn't all perfection and elaboration, though. He loves a good fight, and even more than that, he all but adores challenges, whether physical or mental. He hasn't trained for so long just to know how to do it; if he can battle someone and get a real challenge out of them, forcing him to really fight or think, he might actually be able to muster up some respect for them. Of course, he still wins, but in these cases he tends to insist on deals beforehand: to force the to-be defeated to agree to work directly for him should they lose. Additionally, Chase has a fairly short temper, especially when things don't go as planned. While he does try to avoid using violence whenever he can, sometimes it just becomes necessary, and he is rather unfortunately naturally predisposed to being insanely violent; as such, Chase can become incredibly violent very quickly. This usually doesn't happen unless he wants to show off or things really fall out of his favor.
But many of his greatest strengths also serve as his most damning weaknesses. His pride, for one, can practically cripple him. He's so arrogant and confident in his power that it often blinds him to things or people, causing him to underestimate his enemies and end up looking foolish when they shockingly defeat him. He despises criticism, can't handle loss, and is practically incapable of dealing with people more powerful than him - because by his standards, they shouldn't exist. Additionally, he's not particularly patient when it comes to dealing with people he has no goals or deals with, or who actively try to piss him off whether they intend to or not - he gets irritated very easily when it comes to dealing with 'pests', as he calls them. His not-particularly-subtle aura of evil doesn't tend to garner him many friends, either, even if he does try to use his charm and wit to manipulate them. Due to the time-alteration at the end of the series, Chase also remembers the ‘other world’ he was present in to enough of a degree that he remembers how he failed there, and that realization has sincerely damaged his pride. It’s an extremely sore point for him, and has made him a touch more thoughtful than he previously was - and also a lot more bitter on the concept of fate.
Having lived through the medieval period, Chase will adapt more easily to the castle than some, and will quickly put all his skills to use in order to gain as much leverage as possible among both the other residents and the staff - hunting for food, animal husbandry, weapons training, and so on. It never hurts to have people in your debt, after all.
Previous Game Developments: N/A
Appearance: By default, he’s
human, 5’6”, lean, muscled, and somewhat scarred, with black hair and gold eyes with lizardlike slit pupils. The nails on his hands are black and very sharp, slightly akin to claws, and his teeth are longer and sharper than normal.
When he transforms, he turns into a monstrous
dragon: a twisted sort of parallel to most dragons with an almost human-shaped body, able to stand and move like a human or run on all fours, with a thick, green-and-black-scaled torso and jagged spines running from his skull to halfway down his back and again at the tip of a long, whiplike tail. He is not elegant or majestic like this; he's the antithesis of the nobility dragons stand for.
Abilities: Chase is, first and foremost, an incredible martial artist. Over the last 1,500 years, he has mastered as many styles of fighting as he possibly can, both unarmed and armed. He knows how to approach any battle and how to defeat nearly any enemy, having read the texts and having struggled to gain the brilliance of tacticians both ancient and modern. He has greater speed and strength than a normal human; he can withstand damage and pain to unnatural degrees. He has learned the arts of dark magic and is able to do a variety of things with them, ranging from scrying to transformations to raising the dead. However, he prefers not to use magic unless absolutely necessary; he'd rather fight a battle with his own two hands than manipulate forces typically beyond his control into doing it for him.
He is also brilliant in general matters; having had so many years to live, Chase has taken to academic pursuits as much as martial ones. He has mastered languages, read thousands and thousands of books, visited empires before their fall to learn their works, and so much more. There is very little he has not applied himself to, relatively speaking, and he keeps up with current times and advancements fairly closely. He can also transform into his true form: a dragon, detailed in the appearance section. This transformation gives him even greater physical strength and speed, but causes him to be much angrier and more feral in mind - it’s harder for him to keep control over himself like that. More relevant to Holloway, he has excellent survival skills; he has an advanced sense of smell, knows how to live off the land, and can make do with rudimentary or limited materials, though honestly he’d prefer not to.
With the power limitations in the castle, his magic will be intensely difficult to use, and it’s likely he won’t be able to access much of it anyway given he doesn’t have the right tools or reagents on hand. His superior strength and speed will be lessened, and his ability to transform will be badly hampered; the control necessary to do so will render him much less sane when he finally manages it, resulting in a half-crazed animal being set loose on the castle, and turning back into a human will exhaust him to the point of immobility for at least a day, if not more.
Languages: Primarily English and Mandarin Chinese, but he’s been around the world so many times that he knows a very, very wide variety of other languages and speaks them near-perfectly.
Items: His bruised ego.
Also his armor.
Weapons: Chase traditionally fights bare-handed, and won’t be bringing any weapons with him aside from his own limbs and teeth.
Tattoo: Around the base of his neck, along the line of the collarbones.
