day two - favorite female character
Anya (BtVS)

Talk about a tough category. Honestly, there are a ton of female characters from the Whedonverse that I absolutely love. But I'm going with Anya for this one, partly because all the others fit another category in the meme, but mostly because she's such a wonderful character. I really have a gigantic soft spot for newly human characters; characters that don't fit within a specific category, and Anya is just that. She's not a demon, not entirely human. She doesn't belong in either world, any world (maybe the world with no shrimp, but we don't get to see that). She's so strong with this demon drive and alien independence, thousands of years old and so experienced that the rest of the characters fail to fully grasp who she is, where she's been. And yet she's new, she's uncertain. She's learning. Slowly, slowly gaining her footing in a mortal world. She understands humans without truly being one of them, and she is able to gain their trust, their allegiance, their love, without abandoning her true self and assimilating entirely to their habits and culture. She prides herself on her strength and laments the loss of her power, but she doesn't succumb to human frailty. She finds a unique strength in her displacement, her position spanning two worlds. Really, she's just a lovely character. Not to mention Emma's genius work in this part.
